"You need to read this letter from Sirius.' Hermione threw the worn piece of parchment with Sirius' chicken scratch writing at Hally as she was getting ready for bed. 'It just fell out of one of my robes, I forgot about it on Christmas."

Hally didn't appreciate Hermione's tone and was about to icily respond back when she noticed the panicked look on her best friend's face.

Hally sat on the edge of her bed as her eyes quickly scanned over the letter before widening. "Bertha Jorkins is still missing— that's odd... I remember Mr Weasley and Cedric's dad talking about this in the summer. And now Barty Crouch isn't showing up for work. You don't think...?" She paused her sentence as her own panic started to take over.

"Bertha went to Albania and just vanished. It's worrying that they still haven't found her, it's been months.' Hermione gnawed at her bottom lip before releasing it. 'As for Barty Crouch we know he's alright because he's been instructing Percy on how to fill in for him at the Ministry but... something is happening, Hally. Sirius is worried for you— especially with the second task coming up soon. Speaking of that, have you figured your egg out yet ?"

Hally's stomach knotted for multiple reasons but it now being nearly the middle of January wasn't helping. The second task was coming up in the next five weeks and she wasn't prepared in the slightest. "I haven't figured it out yet but I'm working on it. Cedric gave me a hint at the Yule ball, I've just been a little preoccupied."

Snape had her learning a plethora of new potions. He had shown her how to make the antidote for Veritaserum along with a few other advanced ones that they weren't learning in this year's curriculum. Hally enjoyed learning all of the intermediate potions that he was willing to teach her but all of that added work had her slacking in other areas. She was falling behind in some classes and although she would never tell him this from the fear of him stopping— when she left his classroom at night she was far too tired to do most of her homework.

She had been skating by in all of her classes because the professors all took pity on her for being in the tournament. Hally thanked her lucky stars that she didn't have to take her end of year exams this year; she wasn't sure how she would've managed to pass any of them.

"Hally you need to figure out that egg !' Hermione groaned. 'You're running out of time and you still need to come up with a plan for it !"

"I know Hermione, it's my top priority, just calm yourself." Hally rubbed a hand over her tired eyes.

Hally wasn't sleeping well at all. The fear of the nightmares returning was back in full force after what she had overheard Karkaroff say to Snape at the Yule ball.

Snape was hiding something about his past from her, if Karkaroff was a former death eater could that mean that Snape—

— No. she quickly cut off her thoughts from going there. Snape would never lie about something so big. Whatever she heard had a more logical explanation, she was sure of that.
