"How many more stages will we have to go through. I'm this close to saying screw this?" Yvonne sighed as we left the training room.
"One more year." I whispered to myself. I just needed to hang on long enough. A lot was at stake and I could not afford to give up or mess up.
Catherine was putting us through weapons training. She had made us choose a weapon of our own and paired us up to spar against each other. Then she took the weapons away from those who defeated their partners and made us fight weaponless against our opponents. We would win if we not only defeated them but if we took away their weapons.
"Cheater!" The girl I had gone against explained when I took possession of her double handled sword.
"How?" I raised an eyebrow with the blade in my hands.
"You used your powers."
"And you used yours. It's not my fault you suck compared to me."
The girl growled.
"Don't be a sore loser now." I said and placed the blade close to her chest.
She pressed herself further into the wall. "You've made your point."
"In that case." I pulled away from her and walked away.
At lunch we ate silently. Everyone was slightly on edge. Nobody knew what was coming next.
"Rocco and Winnie are going to become official members of the S-Force next week." Yvonne said while we played chess.
"In a year from now, it will be our turn." Jacqueline said confidently.
"But what tests will we have to go through to get there?" I said, studying my chess pieces.
"It could be a weapons test or a weakness test. Catherine trains us mainly with the purpose of us not needing our powers so we should take our weapons and sparring sessions seriously." Toni explained.
"We should also take advantage of the simulation room at least until Rocco and Winifred have to leave." I contributed.
"Good idea." Jacqueline snapped her fingers then pointed at me.
"Well you need them the most." Yvonne commented.
Jacqueline groaned. "Tell me about it."
We moved on to what Catherine called elements training. Using our environment to our advantage whenever our powers failed us. That included using an enemy's strength against them.
"Candidate 19X!" She suddenly called out after she had demonstrated different techniques.
Everyone looked around, clearly puzzled about who she could be calling.
"Extra strength. I'm talking to you." She barked, her eyes practically shooting lasers at me.
"Oh." I squeaked and scurried over to her.
"Follow me." She commanded and left the room with me on heels.
"I don't know if you've forgotten the instructions against using powers during training."
"I-"
"Don't try to lie either."
"She started it actually."
"And you thought you could finish it by stooping to her level?"
"I can't help that I have extra strength. It has weakness and it is part of me. I'm kind of used to it."
"Oh I know. But you never know. Weaknesses can come overnight."
"Hopefully it never happens."
"Yeah hopefully. I'm letting you off with a warning. Stop depending on your powers during weapons training."
"I'll try."
"Don't try. Do it! You're dismissed."
I turned on my heel and quietly stormed out of the office. In the training room, I saw the girl from yesterday looking at me with a smug look on her face. She clearly wanted to get on my bad side but I knew better than to take her bait. The S-Force was only a year away and I was not going to jeopardize that for any reason.
