"As some of you don't have any known weaknesses, you will be tested today for weaknesses." Catherine announced.
We had been rudely awakened and given a large bowl of fruit and some bone broth for breakfast. Then we were quickly hustled out of the cafeteria. Everyone was understandably irritated.
"I think they're making us cranky on purpose." Kylie whispered beside me.
"Or they're going to keep us up for a long time." I whispered back.
"That too."
"Thank God I finished breakfast."
"Ugh me too. I can't imagine doing this on an empty stomach."
Catherine called out several names from a slip in her hand. Kylie's, Jacqueline's and Toni's names were called. I began to panic when I didn't hear mine.
"If you heard your name, stay behind. If you didn't hear your name, we have your weaknesses on file so you don't need testing so you are free to go."
"Yes!" I exclaimed excitedly. "Have fun being treated like lab vermin for the rest of today."
I hightailed it out of the room, not bothering to spare anyone a backwards glance. All that was needed was to find a quiet corner to sleep.
My weakness was quite documented. The very same thing that I was allergic to. Raw milk. It affected my breathing and made it difficult for me to use my powers. Luckily it had been banned by heads of regions all over the world. Milk now required extensive treatments before consumption.
As long as nobody got a large vat of raw milk and dumped it all over me, I was good.
"Hey!" I heard someone call out.
I turned to the direction of the voice to find the male senior trainee jogging over to me.
"Is something wrong?" I asked as politely as I could.
"No I just wanted to introduce myself. You're fine." His eyes widened when he realised what he said. "I didn't mean in like that- I mean... you are fine but that's not what I was trying to say earlier- what am I even saying." He rubbed a hand down his face.
"Um..." I scratched at the back of my head.
"Ok hi! I'm Rocco." He finally blurted out and extended a hand.
"Yvonne." I slid my hand into his. His nervous smile widened into an excited one.
"Great to finally put a n- I mean it's great to meet your acquaintance."
"Alright."
"Were you headed to the common room?"
"Actually I was going to sneak back to my room."
"Are you meeting someone?"
"Just going to try going back to sleep."
"Not sure you will be allowed."
"That's what I was afraid of."
"You can sleep in the common room. I'll help you find a comfortable place."
"Thank you."
"It's nothing."
We stepped onto the shuttle and he pressed the button of the floor that had the common room.
"Here we are." He announced when the shuttle stopped our floor.
The room was empty except for Rocco's fellow senior trainee lounging in a chair close to the centre of the room.
"You've met Winnie right?" He asked me.
"Sort of." I said, a feeling of dread taking over me.
"Don't be scared. She can't do anything as long as I'm here." He tried to reassure me.
"Alright." I said trying to look relieved but I knew I was failing.
"How's it going Winnie?" Rocco made his way to her with me in tow.
"Bored. I can't wait to continue training." Winnie grumbled.
"Why do you hate having even a little time off?" Rocco asked her in a humorous tone.
"The same reason you love getting some time off."
"Anyways, this is Yvonne." He gestured to me. "Yvonne already knows who you are."
"Just the way I like it." She said then opened an eye to take a look at me.
"Hello." I waved, trying to be friendly.
"Well I see you finally got the courage to talk to not so mystery girl. Good for you and good luck." Winnie shifted her eyes to Rocco who started going pink.
