Thorin continues leading the company through the sickening forest as the path winds on. He brushes aside some leaves to see that the stones round the corner. "The path leads this way." We all follow his word as our path twists and turns. We cover bare ground, high ledges, and fallen trees. Dwalin suddenly thumps his hammer in the ground, the metal clunking against the stone path. "This way." We press on and I notice the dwarves start to get more and more disoriented. "Fili are you alright?"
I ask as he grabs onto my hand for stability. "Yes, just a bit dizzy." Oin speaks up "Air, I need air. My head, it's swimming." It honestly wasn't affecting me, but I too started to feel odd. I can smell all the evil in the air tenfold, it smells like dust and the air is so thick. I feel so distracted I don't even notice my pupils form small slits. My vision doesn't seem to change as the trees seem to go on forever anyway, but the fireflies that flutter around us seem so close.
My head starts swimming, (It's just the sickness. It has to be. I'm feeling the same symptoms as all the others.) The loud sound of rushing water snaps me out of my thoughts. It's a stone bridge leading over the small brook. Bilbo is the first to reach the other side and as I let go of Fili's hand I'm the second. I want to make it out of this crazy forest as fast as possible. I pass Bilbo as he sits down against the wall of the bridge. I crouch low to the ground taking a small break as well.
Thorin suddenly shouts "Keep moving! Nori, why have we stopped?" Nori is staring up ahead into the forest clearing. "The path, it seems to have disappeared." Thorin looks around and Dwalin questions "What is going on?" Oin exclaims "We've lost the path!" Thorin leads "All of you! Find it! Look; look for the path!"
The Dwarves are all looking around frantically for the stone path. I look over to Bilbo and I can see every movement he makes in great detail. Every breath he takes, the small twitches in the fingers, to the beating of his eyelashes with every blink. My own breathing is becoming rapid. I feel something cold and wet braise my arm as it snaps my mind back to some form of reality. The Dwarves panicking is becoming too much as it grows louder. I must get away.
Suddenly a beautiful white stag crosses our path. It seems to be just past the bridge. Everyone is admiring it, however Thorin decides to take up a bow and try his luck. He notches an arrow and misses. This sends the stag running which in turn makes my prey drive skyrocket. My whole body is screaming to chase it.
I look at a panicking Bilbo with a panicked expression of my own. "I'll be back. I promise." I spring up from the crouched position into the woods. My normal vision lingering for only a few seconds more. Everything around me becoming vibrant.
Then the pain begins, but less as it was before. My skin becomes littered with sharp, metal like scales. I drop on all fours, my nails digging themselves into the forest floor beneath me as they grow. I rear myself and jump up onto the closest tree, tearing through spider webs as I make my ascent. My claws shred the bark while I'm climbing. I feel my back start aching and burning, but my body becomes so much more agile.
I'm jumping limb to limb like a wild beast, my balance increasing with every jump. I reach the branch just before the roof. A Quick Look over my shoulder reveals a long scaly tail. My mind starts to waiver and I feel myself get lost in my own head almost as if I've become something else watching from inside my head. I can see everything but I have no control over any of my actions.
The last thing I remember is catching a whiff of a spider coming towards my location, after that it is a fuzzy blur until I become myself again. I vaguely remember pretty, orange, butterflies though.
(Bilbo told me this later but the reason I remember butterflies is that I climbed to the top of the trees around the same time he did. He said it was funny, I kinda looked like a dragon, tail and everything. Though he believes he was just hallucinating. Even though he noticed such small details like the color of their scales and the blood spatters that littered their body.)
