Sophie’s POV

Sophie’s heart thumped wildly, every beat echoing Mason’s footsteps on the court. She clung to the hope that he could find himself again, that the boy who had always been her anchor would rise above the doubt that clouded him lately.

She watched him struggle at first, hands trembling, movements uncertain, and a pang of fear knotted her stomach. Steady, Mace. Focus. You can do this.

She remembered every time he had been there for her, cheering her on at quiz bees, the childhood banter that never quite left, the quiet moments when he’d sneak glances just to check if she was watching. Mason wasn’t just playing a game. He was playing for her, for their past, and for everything they still could be. Suddenly, she knew what to do.

She took out her cellphone and typed, "I LOVE YOU, MACE. ALWAYS HAVE."

Their eyes met, and Sophie gave him a steady, albeit watery smile, then raised her phone. She knows that these were the words he needed. The words she wanted to say ever since they were kids. Her heart felt like it would burst. That message carried everything she felt: belief, hope, love.

You’ve got this, Mace.

Tears threatened to spill, but she blinked them away, drawing strength from the boy who was fighting on the other side of the court, the boy she’d always known.

The gym pulsed with noise, but Sophie’s world had narrowed to one person. With every pass Mason made, every move he pulled off, her heart soared and sank. This was his moment, and she was silently screaming her support, her faith.

And then, as the game reached its crescendo, Mason’s focus sharpened. The doubt, the fear, melted into a fierce determination that mirrored the steady pulse of Sophie’s own hope.

The final buzzer sounded, but Sophie didn’t wait for the cheers.

Her breath caught as Mason broke free from the swarm of teammates and sprinted straight toward her.

Their eyes locked again, this time holding a thousand unspoken words.

Sophie’s tears finally spilled, warm and bright, but her smile was radiant.

Mason reached her, breathless, joy bursting from every pore.

And in that moment, with the crowd fading behind them, Sophie knew, no matter what the game’s score said..

Mason was her victory.
