"This is it." Steven sat down on the edge of the hill and hung his feet over it. Connie nervously did the same. She gasped as she looked over the city. The sunshine bathing over the town like golden rain. Steven put an arm around her. Connie was breathing heavily from the walk up there. She leaned into him and she put her head on his shoulder. They sighed in unison.
"This is beautiful." Connie managed to say.
"You or this view?" Steven said. Connie giggled which earned her a chuckle from Steven. She gently pushed him.
"You dork." She said.
"But I'm your dork." He smiled smugly at her. She looked up at him.
"And don't forget that either." She said. Steven chuckled again and twirled her hair around his finger.
"What was it like for you when I was gone?" Steven asked suddenly.
"What do you mean?"
"Like, when I was in my gem, what were your thoughts?"
"Well, I was afraid. Very afraid. I thought I was never going to see you again. I thought you died and-"
"Gems can't die, we just regenerate." Steven cut her off.
"So...gems don't die? They just...regenerate?" She asked.
"They retreat into their gem and then create a new form." He answered.
"Wow. So their forms are just an illusion. Whatever they want it to be?"
"Yep."
"They're just sentient space rocks...what about you?"
"Well, I have my mother's gem. Or rather... I am her gem. And this is my new form. When she regenerated, she chose to create me. But I'm still technically Rose Quartz. I think..."
"Do you...think about it a lot?"
Steven answered her question with silence.
"Steven?" Connie said looking up at him. Steven looked her in the eyes.
"Connie?" He said.
"Yes?" She answered.
"You'll still like me if I'm a space rock...right?" Connie nodded quickly.
"Yes, of course!"
Steven looked away from her. More silence.
"What's wrong?"
"I just realized... Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl... They've done so much for me and cared for me, despite the fact that I... this form, took away their most important person. It must have been hard... And I'm sorry that one simple regeneration has put you through so much pain. I never meant for it to be this way..." Steven trailed off as he clutched his gem tightly with his free hand.
"Hey." Steven looked at Connie. "Don't ever think that any of that is your fault. She chose to make you. She chose to make a wonderful person. Don't ever let that hurt you. Be proud. Be proud to be Steven. Believe in Steven. I know I do. You're my dork remember?" Steven gave her a million dollar smile. Her words immediately lifting his heart from the darkness it was heading towards. He nodded slowly and looked at the town. But he wasn't only looking at the town. He was looking at the memories. All of which Connie knew, he had retold all his adventures to her. He looked over at FunLand, then at the sea.
"Remember that one time we got stuck in my bubble?"
"You mean when we first met? That was sweet of you to return my glow bracelet."
"It had the smallest label on it, 'property of Connie Maheswaren' I find it kind of cute how you put labels on everything." He poked her. "Are you going to put a label on me too?" He said. Connie chuckled.
"Don't be silly." She grinned. "I'll just monogram you."
"WHAT?" He said. Connie laughed.
"Kidding." She stated simply.
"Awww, it would be kinda cool. Like I walk up to some random person, 'what's your name?'" He started to speak in a deeper voice. "'It's jake what's yours?'" He changed back into his normal voice. "'I don't know ask Connie.'" Connie giggled.
"You would be mine. And everybody would know it."
"I'm already yours." He said. Connie blushed and tried to hide in his shoulder. "Don't hide when you blush, It's cute." Connie slowly lifted her head out and looked at the town. She felt his eyes on her as her cheeks flamed. He chuckled as he stared at her. He looked over the town and felt a strange sensation in his side. He shifted slightly and it went away. He pulled out his phone and checked the time. They had already spent about an hour together. He frowned as he realized they only had 40 minutes left. "Want to go get something to eat?" He said. Connie nodded and they both stood up. She walked off the hill as Steven stood there. The strange feeling returning. His vision turned blocky and he shook his head. It left him quickly. He followed Connie down the hill.
--------------------------------------------
A bell rung as Steven opened the door for Connie. They stepped into the big donut together and Steven greeted Lars and Sadie.
"Sup" Lars said with a wicked grin on his face,
"Hey Steven, whatcha want?" Sadie asked.
"Two Jelly and two glazed." Steven said. Connie stood behind him with her arms nervously wrapped around herself. She had only met Lars and Sadie a couple times, and most of the time it was because her and Steven were in some sort of magical thing. She thought about Stevonnie, and how great it felt to be her. She felt so close to Steven when they fused. The only thing was if they stayed too long, they would begin to feel lonely. If they weren't physically in front of each other, they would miss themselves horribly. Steven's distant words drew her out of her thoughts.
"Connie?" Steven said.
"Huh? Oh sorry, just was thinking about something." Connie said blushing. Lars snickered.
"You thinking 'bout Steven?" Lars made a kissy face which earned him a punch from Sadie and a glare from Steven that chilled him to the bone. Steven's eyes flashed green at him and his expression hardened. It quickly softened as he realized that Lars was visibly shaken. Steven shook his head slowly and sat at a table with Connie. He opened the bag and ate some donuts. His stomach grumbling from eating so many all week. They ate in silence together as Steven looked at Connie. For Steven, Connie was beautiful. She was very attractive and he could be himself around her. At first he was so nervous around her that he would have to change his sweaty shirt twice a day. But now, he could do anything and not be embarrassed in front of her. She accepted him for who he was, she LOVED him for who he was.
He checked his phone and almost choked when he saw the time. They only had 11 minutes before Connie had to leave. He threw the empty bag away as he finished his donut and motioned for Connie to follow him. As they left the Big donut Steven told Connie how much time they had left.
"HOLY CRAP I HAVE TO GO NOW!" Connie ran up the stairs and into the house to retrieve her bag. Steven leaned on the balcony as he called his dad.
"Dad ca-"
"Already almost there buddy." Greg cut him off. Steven grinned.
"You're the best, see ya in a bit." Steven hung up and heard the door open behind him.
"Is your dad almost here?" He heard Connie say. He turned around and jammed his hands in his pockets. She had her bag slung over her shoulder and she was holding the strap of it.
"He's almost here." He replied. Steven turned around as Connie approached him. She stood next to him mimicking Steven as he leaned against the railing.
"I hate that you have to go." Steven said suddenly. "I wish we could be together, like without none of this sneaking around stuff." He looked at her. "Do you wish the same?" He asked her gently.
"Of course. But you know we can't see each other. My parents would...I don't even know what my parents would do."
"They'd probably flip out and yell at me." He grinned. "I noticed that everytime your around me and something happens, they always start to yell at me. Why is that?" They chuckled simultaneously.
"Mom just doesn't like you. I don't understand. Dad likes you though, he actually thinks you're pretty interesting."
"Oh really?" Connie giggled.
"Yup, even without the magic stuff he doesn't know about he still finds you interesting." She said.
"Maybe your moms jealous because she doesn't have a Steven as adorable as me." He said arrogantly, flexing his arms at the same time. Connie pushed him playfully as she laughed.
"I wond-" She was cut off by a horn. They looked down and saw a Van parked down below.
"He's here." Steven said bitterly. "What time is-" He was embraced in a hug before he could finish. He hugged Connie back, tightly. They separated and Steven gave her a quick peck on the lips, which awoke the butterflies in her stomach. They flipped and flapped inside and it felt like her stomach did a complete backflip. She blushed and said a concise goodbye. Steven watched her walk down and get into the van. He waved as it pulled away. He moped into the house and flung himself on the couch. He stared at the ceiling until he heard the warp pad activate. Steven sat up and felt the strange sensation return to him. It stayed with him until the warp pad turned off. Garnet appeared with a bubble floating above her open hand.
"Hey Garnet." Steven greeted.
"Hey Steven, how'd it go?" Garnet walked to him and closed her hand, sending the bubble into the temple.
"Wha? Oh with Connie?" He asked.
"Yeah."
"Awesome. It hurt me to see her go though. I'm glad she thought of this idea."
"Love is a hard thing," Garnet sat next to him on the couch. "It makes you come up with the best- and worst ideas. This, this one was a good idea." Garnet looked off into nothing and chuckled, as if remembering something.
"Yeah. At least I got to see her. I already miss her." He sighed and slumped into the couch.
"Just find something to do to get get your mind off of it." She patted him on the back and stood up. She stood up and walked to the temple door. It glowed brightly before opening to reveal a room full of bubbled gems. She walked inside and Steven groaned out loud as the door closed behind her.
"I MISS CONNIE." He said in a deep voice.
---------------------------------------------
"Thanks for the ride Mr.Universe." Connie said. She was at the entrance to the tennis court and Greg had rolled his window down.
"No problem. Call me if you need a ride to Steven's." He winked and drove off onto the main road. She sat at the entrance as she waited for her mother. Connie's mind drifted to Steven. He was such a dork. He was HER dork. He always knew how to make her laugh. And she always had so much fun when she used to hang out at his place. She loved him dearly. She blushed at this thought. She did love him. But she was also afraid to say it to him, she could feel he was as well. But they didn't need to say it. They felt it. She was pulled out of her thoughts by a car stopping in front of her. She grunted as she got in the passenger seat.
"Hey mom." She said it in a barely audible whisper. But her mom caught it and replied,
"How was practice?"
"Good."
"How was you day?"
"Fine."
"How are you doing?"
"Great." She sighed, there came a time when you just kind of stop answering your parents with full sentences. What's the point when you can just mutter a single word to them? Especially if you're mad at them.
"Wanna hear about my day?" Her mother asked.
"No." Connie replied.
"Too bad. Suffer through for all I care." Dr. Maheswaren caught herself and swallowed hard. She knew better than to talk to her daughter like that. She would, however, put her through the misery of hearing about her day.
"So today. After I dropped you off I went to the hospital and picked up my name tag. Cuz believe it or not I forgot it at work!" Connie mentally groaned. This was going to be a long car ride.A/N
