Chapter Five

Connie heard the familiar ring of her cellphone and slowly sat up. She opened her eyes and saw a blinding ray of sunshine. She sat quietly while waiting for her eyes to adjust. Once her vision adjusted she realized where she was. She gasped.
"Why am I?" She squinted her eyes as she looked around. She looked down and saw Steven sprawled out on the ground beside the bed. "STEVEN! WAKE UP!" Connie yelled. Steven jumped slightly at the sudden sound.
He sat up and looked at Connie.
"Why are you at my house?"He asked her.
"I don't know! I think I fell asleep!" Connie jumped off the bed and searched frantically for her phone. It stopped ringing and she stopped. It began again and she looked for it, guided by its sound she found it under the pillow. She picked it up just as it finished ringing. Connie looked at the screen and immediately gasped in horror.
"EIGHTEEN MISSED CALLS FROM MY MOM?!?!" She yelled putting her hand on her face. Steven turned his head to one side wondering why she was so worried. As if reading his mind,
"My mom is all about safety if she doesn't know where I am-" She was cut off by a sudden knock at the door. They stared at the door as if waiting for it to open on its own. There was another knock and then that person started to knock feverishly. Connie put on her glasses as Steven walked downstairs. He opened it and said.
"Oh, hi Mrs. Maheshwaren! How are-" He was pushed aside as Connie's mother entered the house, followed by her husband. She looked around and as her eyes landed on Connie her eyes widened.
"How did I know I would find you here! How could you! I've been worried sick! I've called you EIGHTEEN times! Did you even eat dinner?!?" On cue Connie's stomach grumbled at the mention of food. Mrs. Maheshwaren turned around and with eyes of Fury glared at Steven. There was a sound as the temple door opened and Pearl stepped out.
"What is going on here?" Pearl said noticing the scene.
"I'll tell you what's going on-" She was cut off by the warp pad activating, the beam of light disappeared and Garnet stood there. She clenched her hands tight against her legs as she noticed the sudden humans.
"W-What was that?" Connie's mother stuttered.
"That's not important," Garnet said changing the subject. "What IS important is why are you here?" She stepped off the warp pad and approached the Maheshwarens. She towered above them menacingly.
"W-We are here to retrieve C-Connie." Mr. Maheshwaren said taken back.
"Yes, and we would like to ask her WHY she spent the night here." His wife said.
"You spent the night?" Pearl asked looking at Connie.
"It was an accident! We were watching TV and it was late so I fell asleep on Steven's bed! It won't happen again I promise!" She replied looking at her parents.
"You're Damn right it won't happen again! I forbid you to ever see THIS CHILD," Mrs. Maheshwaren pointed at Steven. "ever again!" She pointed to her feet and Connie walked down the stairs shamefully looking at the ground.
"Please leave." Pearl said. Steven swallowed a ball in his throat as Connie's mother looked at Pearl.
"Why?" She stated stubbornly.
"Because we don't like using that kind of language around children and if that is how you want to raise your child we don't want anything to do with it. So we are going to ask you again," Garnet took a step forward and summoned her gauntlets. "Please, Leave." She finished.
"Let's go Connie." Mrs. Maheshwaren glared at Garnet. Connie locked eyes with Steven before her mother ushered her out the door. It was closed with a slam. Pearl walked towards Steven who was now sitting on the counter.
"Are you okay?" Pearl asked him sincerely.
"I just...I think me and Connie have finally revealed our feelings we have for each other and we might even have a relationship, and now this happened." Steven looked at Pearl as he twiddled his thumbs.
Garnet's head snapped towards him as he mentioned the word 'relationship'. Her gauntlets disappeared as she turned to Steven.
"I'm not really good at this, Garnet maybe?" Pearl's face was bright blue and she quickly walked into the temple. Steven looked at Garnet as she approached him.
"Relationship?" She asked him.
"Yeah, you know how much I like Connie... I think she likes me back, we even," Steven shifted uncomfortably and looked away. "kissed?" He looked back and saw Garnet had a cheesy smile plastered on her face.
"I think I know who can help you." Garnet glowed brightly and she was cut in half. Steven shielded his eyes from the light, afterward he looked down to see Ruby and Sapphire looking back at him. His eyes turned to stars as he saw that they had willingly unfused, for him...Ruby jumped up on the counter to the left of him. Sapphire floated onto the counter to his right.
"Do you love this girl?" Sapphire asked him.
"Uhhh..." Steven touched his index fingers together.
"Do you?" Ruby asked.
"Yes." Steven felt a weight float off his chest as he said it aloud. Ruby and Sapphire glanced at each other and smirked at him.
"We will help you." Ruby said.
"Help me with what?" Steven asked.
"Help you see Connie again. I know you love her, I know you will be happy together, You just need to find a way to see her. You two find out a system to see each other, you two will both be happy." Sapphire said.
"Thanks for the advice, but how do I see her?" Steven asked.
"You find that out on your own." Ruby stated.
"I understand, I'll see you guys later, I have to go think by myself for a bit." He jumped down and walked out the door heading to the beach. Ruby and Sapphire giggling behind him as he left. He walked to where Steven and Connie shared their first kiss. He found Lion near there and he approached him slowly, dragging his feet in the sand.
"Hey, Lion." Steven greeted his pet. Lion turned his head to him and growled quietly with a mouthful of... something. He had a lizard or something in between his front paws. Steven leaned into Lions mane and his upper half disappeared. He brought his other half in and entered Lions mane. He walked to a hill with a tree on it. Before he could step on it he leaned into the ground and took a deep breath. He walked onto the hill and looked at his mothers things. He smiled as he saw the T-shirt that his father had gave Rose when they first met. He was afraid to examine the chest and the bubbled item.
"What should I do?" He thought. He picked up a picture of Greg and Rose. He smiled again as he saw them... happy. He felt tears in his eyes, he blinked them away and sat the picture back on the floor. He grabbed a video tape that had his name written on it. He ran off the hill and crashed into the pink grass that was the floor. He fell out on the sand and he heard a crunching sound as he landed on Lions half eaten breakfast. He breathed heavily and stood up, brushing himself off.
"Sorry Lion." He said looking at the crushed animal. Lion growled and walked away from him. Steven walked to the big donut, tape in hand. He heard a bell ring as he entered. Steven saw Sadie and Lars chatting at the front counter.
"Hey guys." He greeted.
"Hey Steven." Sadie replied. Lars rolled his eyes and gave a slight wave.
"Sadie can I use the TV in the back? I wanna watch my Moms video again." Steven asked.
"Sure you know where it is." She motioned behind her and Steven walked into the back room.
"His mom's video?" Lars asked quietly.
"Don't worry about it." Sadie whispered to him. Steven shut the door behind him and walked to the TV. He inserted the tape and sat down in a chair. He heard his mothers voice fill the room. He clutched his belly button as he smiled.
"I wish you could be here with me." He whispered. Then came her speech. About him being a human being. He felt...happy as he watched the tape. His mother wanted him to be here. To be a human being. To be himself. He felt a surge of love fill his heart. He loved being himself. He grinned as he knew who it was. His mother was there, she was always there. When he needed her most she was there. She was with him, always. She WAS him. He felt his mothers presence in him and she was happy, she was happy being him. Steven felt a tear roll down his cheek. It wasn't a sad, bitter tear. It was a happy tear. A proud tear. He was proud to be himself. The video ended and he watched the static for a minute. He rubbed his eyes and retrieved the tape. He hugged it as he left. He felt Sadie and Lars eyes on him as he walked out of the big donut. He found Lion and put the tape away. He walked to the top of the hill across from beach city. The one where his mother brought her moss to bloom. He sat down and watched the town. He heard the waves crash on the rocks down below. Steven crossed his arms as he looked down on beach city. He grinned as he remembered his crazy adventures. He started to vibrate and he realized his cell phone was ringing. He grimaced as he read the name on the caller I.D.
"Connie." He read aloud.

How will Steven see connie? What were Lars and Sadie chatting about? What will Steven SAY to Connie? and maybe the most important question of all, what was Lion Eating?!?! :p
