"I wish Steven could see this." Connie was sitting in her driveway. She had her arms supporting her weight behind her. Her legs were spread out before her as she looked up. She couldn't quite see the sun but she could see the wondrous tint it gave to the clouds around it. The sight was breathtaking. This wasn't a normal sundown. She could tell. The moment she saw the sun about to disappear behind the buildings she went outside. To catch a glimpse of the glory. She knew the view from the beach was much better but her mother wouldn't allow her to leave the house. Only time she was allowed to leave was to go grocery shopping with mom or if she had to go to tennis practice. Connie blinked away tears she didn't know she was shedding. The Sundown meant nothing to her if he wasn't here. She had just seen him that day but it was less than thirty minutes with him. She missed being with him for hours at a time.
"Connie! Dinner's ready!" She heard her mother say. Connie stood up and brushed herself off. She sauntered to the front door and shut it behind her with an angry slam. She was more sad than angry but there really was no way to close a door sadly. Connie entered the kitchen and sat at the table. Her mother set a plate of chicken and rice in front of her. Connie lazily picked up a fork and picked at it. Dr. Maheswaren grunted and spoke.
"Don't pick your food, it's bad manners."
"Sure." Connie mumbled and set the fork beside her plate. She wasn't hungry at the time so she simply stared at the food.
"O...K..." Her mother said with a raised eyebrow.
"So how was work honey?" Mr. Maheswaren asked awkwardly.
"Pretty good, nothing bad mostly just a couple of check ups, that's about it. You?"
"Not much happened either... I'm sorry but Connie what's wrong?" He turned to his daughter.
"Why won't you guys let me see him." Connie blurted without thought. Dr. Maheswaren pressed her lips in a tight line. She knew who she was referring to.
"I don't think he's a good influence for you." She replied blankly.
"Priyanka." Her husband said.
"What? He isn't! They left on a bus! She spent the night without permission! He doesn't even have a mother!" Dr. Maheswaren covered her own mouth. She didn't even realize what she had just said.
"That's were your wrong! He has three! They care for him just like you to me! I care about him as well! His mother died giving birth to him! If you don't want me to see him because he doesn't have a mother then I don't know who you are! " Connie bolted upstairs as she finished her sentence. Dr. Maheswaren set her own plate aside and set her head on the table. She despised people who did that but right now all she wanted to do was slam her face into the dirt.
"Priyanka..." Her husband said.
"What is wrong with me?" She replied.
"I-"
"I just keep saying these things. Ever since this whole Steven," she said his name in a monotone voice. "Incident. Its like subconsciously I'm taking my anger out on my daughter." She sighed. "I don't know what I'm going to do Doug."
"You'll figure it out." Her husband picked up all their plates and dumped them in the sink. He gave her a quick glance before leaving the kitchen. Dr. Maheswaren groaned. He could be the sweetest man in the world but when it came to dishes he would hide at the bottom of the ocean.
"Dooooouuuuuuuuug."
"What?" He popped his head in.
"Wash the dishes. I've had a long day."
"Fine but you have to go make up with Connie." Mr. Maheswaren gently caressed her back before walking to the sink for his chore. Dr. Maheswaren contemplated what she would say to her daughter. But there was no point to, she knew that as they spoke the right words would find their way out. She slowly sat up and walked to the stairs. Each step she took was slower than the last. Once she reached the top she peered into her daughter's room. Connie had left the door slightly open, allowing her mother to catch a glimpse inside. Connie was curled up in her bean bag chair. She took slow, rhythmic breaths. She was casually inhaling his scent off the chair. She squeezed it wondering if she hoped enough, he would appear. Connie jumped slightly at the sound of her door being pushed open. She sat up and looked at her mother.
"What?" Connie said. Her word rolled off her tongue, dripping with anger.
"Connie I just wanted to say..." Dr. Maheswaren room a deep breath before she spoke. She was hardly ever in the wrong so it wasn't usual of herself to say these words. "...I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said what I said. I know you two are friends and you care about him deeply. I know he's a good kid, but as I said before, I don't think he's a good influence for you." She paused, knowing her daughter would say something. Connie, in fact, opened her mouth to say something but shut it quickly. "I just really care about you and I worry about you. I remember, some days you would come back from his house with bandages on your face and hands. You still have yet to tell me how that happened. Did he hurt you?"
"What? No." Connie said taken back.
"Well, what happened then?"
"Um..." Connie thought quickly.
"The cuts weren't deep they were as if from something sharp."
"Steven and I were at Mr. Universe' storage unit. He was cleaning it out and asked us to help. There was a lot of stuff and I accidentally cut myself with stuff as we moved it around."
"Hm. Alright. I hope you understand though. I love you honey. I'm doing this to protect you." Dr. Maheswaren hugged Connie and walked out the room.
"I can protect myself now." Connie mumbled.A/N
Hello guys! How's it going? Not too long of a chapter today. Not to short either though so I'm happy about that. Guys if only Doug knew why was at the bottom of the ocean. He would prefer to do the dishes. I had a nice follower named SUlover14 who told me that they had released a new Steven Universe short. They told me yesterday and I loved it. It was cute, don't want to spoil to much if you haven't seen it. So go watch it guys (:
Who else is sad about the hiatus? It's sucks but at least Matt Burnett (a writer of the show) said that the rest of season two is really interesting. Excited about that 😊.
