Child. I am stronger. I am sure we both know that. But you are very...how do I say this? Not powerful. More like, good at being defensive. You've managed to put up walls to keep me out. But eventually, overtime, those walls will break. And I will kill you. No, not kill you. I need you. I will let you watch as I kill everything and everyone you have ever loved. Starting with that little girl. Connie. Let me just say when I'm done with her. Ha. She won't even be Connie. More like a disemboweled dog. Lines are meant to be crossed. Rules are meant to be broken. And people...people are meant to die.
Steven was on his knees. He held his head tightly, the voice, hitting him with words. Blow after blow, nonstop, Steven's face streamed with tears. The words hurt him far worse than any physical damage ever could. Garnet and Amethyst sat next to him. Their voices were being blocked out by the voice. The strange feeling in his side was no longer strange. It was painful. It was like he was being ripped in half slowly. He coughed out blood through his sobs.
GO AHEAD. Continue to cry. You're just proving my point. The weaker you become, the stronger I get. Your walls are starting to crumble, and my time will come. Let me give you a little taste of what I will do.
Images filled Steven's head. But they weren't normal images. They were horrible images. There was a picture of Steven standing over four broken gems. Cracked into mere shards. And blood covering his hands. He suddenly felt...powerful. Energy coursing through his veins. But he quickly extinguished it as he thought of somebody. Light filled his soul as she replaced the horrible images. She giggled and held out her hand. He reached for it but before they could even touch fingertips, he fell backwards. Away from her. Away from Connie. He opened his mouth to say something but the voice cut him off.
You may have one this battle but there will be more. I will be stronger, and your "Connie" will be no more.
He heard a dark chuckle and he came back to reality. He opened his swollen eyes and looked around himself. He was lying in somebody's arms. They were moving, he could tell by the sound of footsteps. Not of one but of two people. Steven gave a slight jump to alert his carrier he was awake. Garnet looked down at him and smiled sadly.
"What happened?" She set him down on the sidewalk.
"I...I don't know." He looked up at her. Pain visible across his face. His memory flashed to the image of the shattered gems. He remembered the blue and red shards mixed together. Steven breathed heavily as the images flashed across his eyes. He looked at the ground, wondering. What was that voice? Why was he getting these...breakdowns? Why was he getting these images? Why was he having these thoughts? Why? Just why was he hearing this voice? He pushed the thoughts from his head and slammed himself into Garnet. Steven gripped her leg tightly as he sobbed into it. She wiped something from underneath her shades and patted his back.
"There, there." Garnet said trying to calm him. He replied with sobs. She gave Amethyst a worried look, which she quickly returned. Amethyst' eyes were gleaming, clearly on the brink of tears. Garnet kneeled down on the ground and hugged him. The embrace slightly reassuring to him.
"You don't have to tell us if you don't want to. You can tell us in your own time." Garnet said as motherly as she could muster. He nodded in her shoulder and they hugged for what seemed like forever. At least, until Steven felt safe. When they separated Garnet wiped blood off of Steven's lips with her fingers.
"There. All better." She gave him another sad smile. Steven turned to Amethyst and gave her a hug. One that they both needed badly. She tried to laugh and be light hearted.
"When did you get so strong, little man?" She said as she tried to laugh. It earned her a chuckle from Steven. He separated from her and turned the way they came from. To think this had happened mere minutes after he had seen her. I will not let her worry for me. She's had enough. He told himself. Steven looked at Garnet.
"Can we go home now?" He asked her.
"Sure." She started to walk and Steven walked quickly to catch up with her. He held her right hand which immediately proceeded to make his hand cold. The gem clearly acknowledging his prescence. He held it anyway, it helped assure himself that Garnet would always be there. He turned to Amethyst and reached out his hand for her to hold. She gave him a genuine smile and grabbed it.

Garnet held the door open for Amethyst and Steven. They entered to a nervous Pearl sitting on the couch.
"Pearl?" Steven said. He snapped her out of her trance and she looked at him. Her eyes widened and she flew out of her seat. She held him tightly and gripped the back of his shirt.
"What's wrong P?" Amethyst asked.
"I-I have bad news." She released him and looked at the ground. The three of them listened to her closely as she shared her findings. "I was looking through my resources and I checked the crystal heart. Guys, the gem has hatched."
"What?" Garnet said.
"You heard me correctly. It has hatched."
"What? What does she mean? Guys?" Steven asked confused.
"Steven. Every 500,000 years. The crystal heart releases a special gem. The gem it releases and how fast it releases it depends on the kind of crystal heart it is. We have a Viper heart. It's peaceful but when disturbed it becomes very dangerous. It releases the gem for...purposes. But once the gem is released it will find a host. Depending on how long the gem takes to find a host, the host will become more hostile. All it takes is a little cut for the gem to be able to use somebody as a host. I believe, that you are that gem's host." Pearl said.
"But...how? I-" he stopped speaking in disbelief. "Why does the crystal heart do this?" He asked her earnestly.
"Well, it does this to replicate the gem. After a certain period of time, the gem will take control of your body and um-er...replicate its self. So after the replication process is over the gems will return to the heart, most of them anyways. Others will go on rampages and just, destroy everything. The sole purpose for this process was for war. The crystal heart was used as a weapon. It destroyed so many gems. Yet, it is so powerful we must keep it in check. By it currently running the temple it will stay normal. But I guess, somehow, it must've slipped past us." Pearl looked at Garnet.
"There is one way to stop it." Garnet mentioned.
"How?" Steven said.
"We don't know, your mother was entrusted with the antidote. She never told us, I guess she took the secret with her to your gem." She said. Steven sighed.
"Yes when the gem takes over, it replaces your skin with a rock like substance. Wether the gem has color or not, changes it's shade. Until eventually after it spreads completely to your body, you disappear. The rock isn't one thing. It's many gems packed so tightly together that it looks like one surface. After you have served your purpose the rock releases you and your gone. The gems leaves your body after they have used it and just you disenegrate. You die. You become shattered..." Pearl said on the verge of a mental breakdown.
"Hey, when hippos poop they fling it everywhere with there tails." Amethyst said suddenly. They looked at her strangely before Steven burst out laughing. She blushed. "Sorry I just wanted to be part of the conversation..." She trailed off and crossed her arms awkwardly. Steven wiped a tear from under his eye and straightened, for he had crouched over in his fit of laughs.
"I'm gonna go out for a swim. Wanna come with Amethyst?" He said.
"Sure." She answered. He walked to the closet under the stairs and pulled out a bag.
"Let's go." They quickly exited the house, leaving Pearl and Garnet behind.
"What do we do? I can't do this. I can't lose somebody. Not again!" Pearl clasped her hands over her own face as she spoke. She rambled on and on. Until Garnet had enough.
"Stop! Just Stop." Garnet stared at her. "It's not going to happen. We...we will figure something out. And Steven will survive. I hope." Garnet clenched her hands into fists at her sides. "He'll be fine."
"But what if he doesn't make it? What if we can't find a cure and he dies? I can't lose my baby!" She sobbed.
"Stop! The more you act this way the worse you'll make it. Plus, he's my baby too."
