AUTHOR POV
The dining hall was softly lit, golden chandeliers casting a warm glow across the long table. Sanjana sat across from Veer, her face lit with excitement as she spoke animatedly about Chavi — how they had been inseparable in college, the silly things they used to do, and how she couldn’t wait to show her around Italy.
Veer listened quietly, his fork moving slowly, his gaze occasionally drifting to her but mostly fixed on his plate. His silence wasn’t cold, but it carried a weight Sanjana couldn’t ignore. She wanted him to share her joy, yet he remained guarded, only nodding faintly when she paused.
When dinner ended, Elena and the staff cleared the table, and the two of them walked upstairs together. Inside their room, Sanjana sat on the edge of the bed, still smiling to herself about the reunion, while Veer picked up his phone from the nightstand. He slipped it into his pocket and moved toward the door.
Sanjana frowned, watching him. “Where are you going?” she asked, her voice carrying a trace of irritation.
Veer paused, turning back to her with a casual expression. “In the study,” he replied simply.
Her brows knit together. “It’s late. Time to sleep. And you…” she trailed off, the annoyance clear in her tone.
“Just for a few minutes. Okay?” he said softly, his voice calm as ever. Without waiting for more, he opened the door and stepped out, leaving Sanjana staring after him with a mixture of frustration and worry.
The echo of the closing door lingered in the room. Sanjana lay back on the bed, hugging the pillow, her mind restless. She wanted to believe he was just caught up with work, but something inside her whispered otherwise.
Meanwhile, Veer walked down the hallway, his footsteps steady, expression unreadable. Reaching the study, he closed the door behind him, the quietness of the room wrapping around him.
Veer exhaled, leaning back in the chair. Nishant was his friend — a man he trusted, a bond formed long before power and enemies entered his life. He knew Chavi and Nishant weren't the threat. But the timing of their arrival… just when Dario had gone silent — that was what unsettled him.
He stared at the screen, his jaw tightening. Dario won’t touch them. He won’t risk such a move. Veer told himself this, yet the unease gnawed at him. Men like Dario thrived on fear — and right now, fear was exactly what Veer felt clawing at the edges of his control.
With a low sigh, he poured himself a glass of whiskey, staring at the amber liquid under the dim lamp. I’ll keep them safe. Sanjana, Chavi… Nishant. No matter what.
