Kiley:
I leaned my back on the wall besides the kitchen door as I eavesdropped on my parents' conversation.
I couldn't make out any of the muffled voices I heard, making me frown. I sighed as I was about to give up.
"I...Kiley to know...I'll be fine." I heard my father's faint voice say. Chewing on the inside of my cheek, I tried to make out what they're saying.
"...you lied...her?" My mom asked, sounding angry.
"I had to!" I heard my father yell through the computer speakers. My eyes burned with unshed tears as I felt my chest tighten up, and my stomach twist and turn.
I can't lose my father...
"Promise...come back," my mother said, lowering her voice.
My head started to hurt slightly and I started to walk away, up the stairs and into my room. I wanted to forget about that incident, so I took this time to test out my own voice. I wanted to hear myself talk, and so I started to hum.
My voice is weak, and imitating sounds makes my throat feel weird. Such a long time without talking, of course it'll feel weird.
This is a big step for me.
