Chapter 19

Talia's POV

I sit on my bed in the room that I share with my two foster, soon to be adopted sisters. Cara and Lucy are super nice. I don't understand how Cara's mom could want drugs over her and her brother Nathan. I also don't understand how Lucy's mom could just run off with some guy, leaving Lucy alone to fend for herself. I don't really understand the whole foster system. Well I do, I just don't understand how someone could want to give their child up or want something more then their child and choosing that thing over their child. Mine and my brothers case is a little different. And so is Drake's. He is actually the son of my foster mom and dad.
I close my book and lay down on my bed.
"Knock, knock." I hear someone say.
"Come in." I say back and sit up.
I look at who just walked in the room and it's the other foster boy who hasn't been here for that long, Daniel.
"You look like you've got a lot on your mind." He tells me as he sits down beside me on my bed.
"I do." I tell him honestly.
"What about?" He asks.
"Just school and my friends," I pause "and my parents." I say quietly after a moment.
"What about them?"
"Just what would've happened if they didn't go out that night? They would probably still be here and Michael and I wouldn't have had to go through everything that we have had to for the past few years." I explain to him. "I'm sorry."
"Why are you apologizing?"
"Well our situations are so different."
"Yes they are, but it doesn't mean that one sucks more than the other."
"I guess you're right."
"Just because my mom died and my dad beat me, causing me to have to be taken away, doesn't mean that your situation sucks more than mine."
"Ya, but everything just sucks, you know?"
"Ya I know. The world has a way of beating you even harder when you're already down."
We sit there in silence for a little. Just sitting beside each other letting the quiet embrace us. I look at his arm and see the scar that I always seem to notice, I'm just never brave to ask what it's from.
"You're curious aren't you?" He asks breaking my from my train of thought.
"Curious about what?"
"About the scar on my arm. You're probably wondering how I got it."
"Ya, kind of, but you don't have to tell me."
"My dad came home one night and it was obvious that he was drunk. He had a bottle in his hand that he kept drinking from. He got mad at me for some reason and ended up breaking the bottle and cutting me with it. The cut was really deep and I even had to go to the hospital. I had lied and said that I cut it while doing the dishes, because I couldn't stand the thought of losing another parent."
"I'm really sorry, I shouldn't have said anything."
"It's okay I trust you."
"You trust me?"
"Ya I do."
Just then he leans over and kisses me and I kiss him back. Wait I can't be doing this. I'm his foster sister! I could be kicked out for doing that. I quickly pull away and stand up.
"Wha - what's wrong Talia?" He asks me.
"I - I've gotta go." I say and leave my room.
I run down the stairs and out the door. I live close to Alex's house and that's the only place I can think of going right now. I run down the street until I make it to her place. I knock on the door and Livvy opens and noticed that I'm out of breath.
"Talia, what happened?" She asks and drags me up to Alex's room where Alex is laying on her bed.
"Oh my god Talia! Are you alright?" She asks and hands me a glass of water.
"I - I'm - fine." I say in between breaths.
"What happened? Did you run all the way here?" Livvy asks and I nod.
I collapse into Alex's beanbag chair still trying to catch my breath. Stupid asthma.
"Wait so why did you run all the way here?" Alex ask me.
"Um, me and Daniel kinda kissed." I say and they both look at me wide eyed.
"You did what now?" Livvy asks in disbelief.
"We kissed and I needed to get away before someone saw us." I explain.
"Wait so why did you run if he was kissing you, he's totally cute." Alex says upsetting me a little.
"Foster siblings can't have relationships. Daniel and I could get kicked out of the house for kissing." I tell them.
"You're both almost 18. Won't it not matter after that?" Livvy asks me.
"My birthday isn't until December, so they're going to adopt me and even though Daniel's birthday is in September that's still too far away to be jeopardizing anything. I do want to be adopted so that I have somewhere to go for the holidays and I want this to be Daniel's last home. He's finally gotten into a good one and I don't want that to be taken away from him." I explain.
"Then just tell him to wait a little while, and if he really likes you he will wait until you both turn 18." Livvy tells me, kind of putting me at ease.
"Ya that's what I'm going to do. I'm going to talk to him. Oh but what if he doesn't want to talk to me. He kissed me and I ran out on him."
"I'm sure he'll at least want and explanation if you did that." Alex says.
"Ya I guess you guys are right. You guys are great you know." I say and stand up to give them both a hug.
"So what are you going to do?" Livvy asks me.
"I'm going to go back home and talk to Daniel." I reply.
"You go do that." Alex says and I walk out of her room.
