Chapter 12 What I once knew

I saw his eyes blink open. I finally felt relief. 

"Seru!" I exclaimed happy to see my friend alive. "God I'm glad you're okay!" I gave him a reassuring smile as I stood over him holding his bandaged hand. 

"Kushina?" He questioned. "What...What happened?" 

"Some sound ninja attacked." I leaned down into his ear and whispered, "I think Killian is coming up with a plan. He is still missing." My head drooped. Seru's black eyes glinted as he saw my battered face. He reached his hand up to mine as he stroked my forehead. 

"I'm not strong enough.." He murmured. 

"Seru? Is something wrong?"

"No." His face grew crestfallen. Suddenly Baku stood up. 

"You're friend? Is he okay?"

At the sound of Baku's voice Seru stood up with lightning coming out of his hands. His face sneered in anger. 

"DID YOU DO THIS TO KUSHINA?" He roared. Baki threw his hands up as a mask of terror rang through his face. 

"No! I swear I never touched her!" 

"Seru!" I cried grabbing his arms. "Baku is trustworthy. Trust me!" 

"No! I can't!" He ran with the lightning sending streaks of electricity towards Baku as he stood defenceless against the surge of electric current running through his body. 

My eyes grew wider. My hands were clenched on Seru's arm as tears stung my face. The cry of an agonized yell echoed around the camp. 

I screamed. Tears dripped down my face in anguish. I could hear the thump of the body of Baku as I fell to the ground. What had happened to Seru while he was away? What made him take an innocent life so effortlessly? My eyes blurred. 

I saw a glimpse of the now dead figure who had saved our lives. Anger swelled inside me. I whipped my face around to Seru's as the tears dripped down. 

"What have you become? Seru? An animal? Baku saved our lives! He never wanted to be in the Chunin exams! His father made him and he realized that revenge is not the-" 

Seru's finger touched my lips shushing me. His other hand reached up and swept the tears from my face. I mouthed a single word silently. "Why. Why. Why."

"I couldn't trust him. Not after seeing you hurt." The anger had fallen away from his face. I stopped. Not after seeing you hurt, rang in my head.  

"Seru?" I questioned. His face drew closer. We were so close. The moon seemed to cast sharp shadows on us. The world seemed to slow. I then noticed his face smile. Those small lips smirking into a kind smile. 

Those kind lips I used to stare at all the while we were sitting under the clouds.  Then I looked at the body of Baku and frowned. The old Seru would never do that. Never. I trusted Baku. I don't know why. Maybe because he was in the same situation as me. A force full parent. 

Seru took my chin and twisted it back to the gaze we held before. All I could see now were black pitless eyes. No soul. 

He drew in closer to me. No. Not after what he did. "GET AWAY!" I shouted. I shoved him away forcefully. I couldn't look at him now. Not after what he did. 

"Kushina? Did I really do that to make you mad? No. I did it to protect you." 

I shoved my fingers into a T and the clouds of smoke popped up around me. Shadow clones all looking like me appeared. I walked into the crowd of clones to get away from Seru. I held my shoulders as the cold night began to set in. 

"WHERE IS THE REAL KUSHINA?" Seru shouted. All my clones grumbled in anger. One even shouted,

"EY SUCKER! I'm over here!" 

Seru went in that direction as I continued to travel through the clones and finally back into the comfort of the trees. 

I murmured to myself, "I don't know what you've become. Seru. I don't want to know. The person I now know is not my friend. Nothing can change that but yourself." I felt the bark of the giant tree under my fingers. "I should probably go and bury Baku. Unless they take his body back." 

I reached into my back pocket and reached out the heaven scroll. I knew nothing was in it but I desperatly wanted to look in it. 

I heard the snap of a twig behind me as I whirled around bearing two kunai knives in my hands.
