Chapter 36 Strength, Voice, Believed

It had been 3 years. 3 years of being in the hospital. I was ready to take my first steps. Ushio had been ready for this day. He stayed by my side. Urging me on. I was stronger. Stronger than I ever was. I had 3 years. 3 years of healing. Nyen and I stayed strong side by side. She had finally made it into the Anbu Black Ops Corps. I remembered that day. She even got me a new smock to celebrate. Sadly though...My voice is still lost. I can hum which was a miracle.

Ushio's silver eyes beamed with hope. "You ready Kushina? Today's the day! I even invited Naruto to join us."

My father. He visited often. I could sense that he never lost hope. Never lost hope in me. He believed in me and I in him.

I grabbed Ushio's hand and smiled. 3 years of back breaking work. Everyday I would stretch out my muscles until they cracked and bled. A new layer healed and I had stretched out my muscles so I could finally move once again. The nurse's let me have, for the first time, actual food. Human food. Not liquid food in a bag. I had ramen but ended up puking it out. So I took it slow. Eating like a grandma but now my stomach is normal once again.

I pull myself up so my back is straight. I swing my legs over to the side of the bed and scoot up closer to the edge. Ushio holding onto my hand. I looked into his silver eyes and smiled.

A walker stood in front of me. Now I feel like an actual granny. My feet touch the floor. I slowly let my legs take the weight of my body. They wobbled and quaked. I reached out for the walker handles and clasped my burnt hands around it. I drew it closer. Ushio's hand now shifted to my back. The other on my arm. Tae stood nervously and Killian smiled. Nyen stood a few feet in front of me. She was my goal.

I felt another presence. Naruto. He stood in the other corner with his eyes wide in admiration. Tae could feel my excitement rise in my mind. This was it. I would finally complete my goal. I would become a ninja once again.

Very carefully I put my weight on the walker and took a small step. My toes touching the cold tiles. I took another one and another one! People shouted for joy. I had done it. I kept on walking to Nyen as my heart beat faster. I was already loosing my breath. My legs were turning numb but I didn't care. Nyen held her arms open as I neared her. That was close enough for her. She threw herself at me and hugged me. "You did it!" She exclaimed. She didn't expect an answer. Neither did I.

"We.....did.....it."

The room went silent. All eyes peeled to mine. I had spoken. I had found my voice. Nyen beamed with joy as her eyes filled with tears. "Yes...We did it!"

In 3 weeks I was out of the hospital. I would have to check everyday for physical therapy but I wanted to go home. I missed it. Naruto was wheeling me back in a wheelchair. We reached the base of the stairs. I tried to stand but Naruto instead picked me up and carried me into our apartment.

"You didn't have to do that you know." I murmured.

"Well, at times like that you have to make a decision. I know you are strong but you are my daughter and I can carry you up the stairs if I want too." He huffed as he laughed. The apartment was spotless. I was shocked. I knew father was a messy person but he must've been pretty bored when he came back from work. "I even threw all my paper cranes out!"

"Really?! I thought you loved those things!"

"Well, I love something more now. You."

I hugged his neck as he carried me to my room. Everything was the same. Nothing had been touched. I was glad to see that he at least dusted my room. It smelled abandoned.

He set me down on my bed and smiled. "In a couple more weeks I'm going to put you back into your old team. Tae has decided to join your group since Seru went to a different one."

I smiled. Killian and Tae were the perfect couple. It might get annoying when going out on long missions but it didn't matter. I had completed my goal. I was going to become a full fledged shinobi.
