Chapter 33 Smell of Lilacs

I woke up to the faint smell of flowers. I looked over and saw a stack of gifts and teddy bears all lined up. A woman walked into the room with a clear bag in her hands. She stuck it onto a pole and attached it to my arm.

"I'm glad you are awake!" She gave me a pleased smile. "Lady Tsunade will be right in to tell you all the details. Should I wake your father?"

I looked over and saw him still laying on my bed. His eyes closed. I nodded my head. He probably needed to hear what Lady Tsunade had to say. If she was the head honcho taking care of me, I knew that something was terribly wrong. The burns could've done more damage then I thought.

A slightly older woman walked into the room with a click of her heels. She had long blond hair tied up in a ponytail down her back. Small streaks of grey hidden in her hair. She didnt' even look old. Not a single wrinkle on her face. She was the 4th Hokage. She stepped down after the 4th Great Ninja War and had Naruto take in her stead. Naruto always called her Granny. For that reason, I had no clue.

She looked pleased when she saw that my eyes were open but she soon feel gloomy. "Kushina, I have some very grave news. The burns admitted to your body were much worse than I anticipated. Most of your organs were sevearely burned but our medical staff have cleared up all of your organs from burn damage." She took a breath. "Your skin though. If we give it time we may be able to take off the outer layer of your skin and let a new layer take place. That is if your cells are willing to co-operate. So far they have not. Just like your Father, stubborn. I've done extensive research while you were asleep. Making sure that everything is working fine in your body. So far nothing major has happened. Just your voice. The screams you admitted while being awake made you loose your voice. I don't know when it will come back but I'm sure it will soon."

"Now, your muscles however are another rising concern. They were very badly burned so movement will cause an issue. I do know that you will be able to walk through rehabiliation. For now. All you can do is sit and wait for your burns to heal. Other than that, no brain damage and nothing else." She gave me a firm nod and walked out of the room.

Naruto grabbed my hand as tears stung his eyes. I knew he was in pain. It wasn't his fault that I got burned. It was my fault. I knew Nyen would hold a grudge against herself. Nyen didn't do it. I should've used a clone in my stead and attacked her from the front. Now I plan when I'm in a hospital bed.

"You've been asleep for 3 weeks now. I was starting to worry that you'd never wake up. I  promised your mom. I promised I would keep you safe and now look at you. Your hair, your skin is gone. I can't see you suffering. It hurts me as it hurts you."

I grunted as his tears dripped onto my sheets. I wanted to talk. My throat hurt. I wanted someone to talk to. Someone who could hear me. Someone who could understand. I wanted to cry with my father. No tears came. Not a single one.

The smell of lilacs filled my nose as the sun streamed in through the windows sending shadows cascading on my blanket. I cringed but realized they weren't dangerous. The smell of lilacs lulled me to sleep as I heard my father sobbing.
