Kenzie's POV

It's Friday. I made it a whole week of school without my dad showing up. Mom is probably right. I don't have anything to worry about.

My day wasn't the best, though. Clarissa keeps pushing to know more about my father. I don't want to tell her anything, though. And Mikayla has just all of a sudden stopped talking to me. I didn't even do anything.

When I got in the car, Mom immediately saw that I was in a bad mood. "What's wrong?" She asked.

"Nothing."

"Don't give me that answer. You and I both know that something is up. So what happened?"

I shrugged. "I don't know. I'm just having some issues with some friends."

"Like what? Maybe I can help?"

"You know that picture that someone took with of us with my father?"

"Yeah."

"Everyone is just reacting weirdly to it."

I know, I didn't exactly tell the full truth, but minor details aren't that important, right?

"Don't worry. It will blow over soon. For now, just act like nothing happened, and eventually, everyone will forget about it."

We got home, and it smelled really good. "Mom, did you cook?" I asked.

"Yeah," she answered.

"What's the special occasion?"

"Nothing. Maybe I just want a good, homemade dinner with my daughter."

"You're a terrible liar," I snickered.

"Hey," she said playfully pushing me. The vision of my dad forcefully pushing me to the floor popped in my head, but I pushed it aside. I refuse to think about him anymore. I mean, come on, this is Mom. She would never do anything like that to me. "Do you have any homework?"

"Mom, it's Friday. I have all weekend."

"Go ahead and get it done. It'll be out of the way."

"But I can do it later."

"Kenzie, now," she said firmly. I went up to my room and started on my homework. I don't get it. I barely have anything and I have all weekend. I just got home on a Friday, the last thing I want to do is homework.

I finished it in half an hour, then went back down to my mom. She was doing something with the baked chicken when the doorbell rang.

"Can you get that for me, please?" Mom called out.

"Yes!" I called back as I made my way to the door. I opened it, and there he was.

"Nick!" I squealed as I wrapped my arms around him.

"Hey, kiddo," he responded, picking me up.

"You didn't tell me you were coming!"

"We wanted it to be a surprise," Mom said as she came up.

I looked at Nick and wrapped my arms tightly around his neck. "I missed you," I said.

"I missed you, too. And your mom."

"But mostly me," I joked.

"Of course," he answered.

He put me down and we made our way to the living room.

"I hope you're having a better day now," Mom said.

I looked up at her and nodded. I was so happy to see Nick again!
