But his silence was answer enough.

Fili POV

Morning came quietly to Rhosgobel.

Too quietly.

I stood outside Radagast's dwelling, looking toward the trees. A thin mist clung to the forest floor, and the early sunlight barely reached through the branches.

Something had changed.

Perhaps it was the knowledge Gandalf had brought.

Perhaps it was simply knowing that the peace we had fought so hard to regain might not last.

But I could not shake the feeling that something was coming.

Behind me, I heard footsteps.

I turned.

My One, Elara, stood in the doorway.

She wrapped her arms around herself against the morning chill and looked toward the forest.

"You have been standing there for some time." She spoke.

I smiled faintly.

"I know."

She stepped beside me.

"Still thinking about Gandalf?" Elara asked.

"And Kíli." I stated.

She looked at me.

"Your brother?"

I nodded.

"I wonder how he and Tauriel are doing."

"They are safe in Erebor." She attempted to reassure me.

"I know."

I looked toward the mountains in the distance.

"Knowing is not always enough." I said.

She slipped her hand into mine.

"No. It isn't."

Before I could answer, the sound of approaching horses reached us.

I turned toward the path.

Two riders emerged through the trees.

One was an Elf.

The other—

My breath caught.

"Theia." I whispered.
