Recap-
Sauron was still out there.

But he was weak.

And we were not the frightened people we had once been.

We had survived Smaug.

We had reclaimed our homeland.

We had found our families.

And we would protect what we had built.

For now, that was enough.

We rode toward bardh *home*.

Theia POV

Erebor came into view just before sunset.

The great mountain rose from the land like it had always belonged there.

bardh *home*

I had seen it countless times in my dreams while I was away.

But dreams could never capture the feeling of standing before it again.

The stone walls of Dale caught the last light of the sun. Smoke rose gently from chimneys, and the sound of distant bells carried across the valley.

People were returning home from the day's work.

Children ran through the streets.

Merchants called to one another.

Guards stood at the gates.

Life.

That was what I noticed most.

Life.

Not the scars left by Smaug.

Not the ruins.

Not the darkness that still lingered beyond the mountains.

Life.

Erebor was alive.

Legolas slowed his horse beside mine.

"You missed it."

I glanced at him.

"What?"

"Your home."

I smiled.

"I missed all of it."

Ahead of us, Fili raised his hand.

"Look."

The gates were opening.

Several riders waited beyond them.

My heart leapt when I recognized the first two.
