A New Beginning

Hospital Visits

Lucas POV:
After Riley leaves, Maya and I walk back to class taking our time. In fact, when we got back it was time for our next class. We were walking down the hall side by side, when Maya speaks up, "Hey Lucas, do you think Auggie will be okay?" Auggie is like a little brother to Maya, and she cares for him a lot. "I'm sure he will be just fine." I say and give a hopeful smile. Maya then walks into her next class. I just continue down the hall to mine.

*Time Skip*

After school, I bring the kids home, but I'll bring them to Farkle and Maya's soon because I'm going visit Auggie. I change into black basketball shorts and a John Adams High School t shirt. I walk out to the living room and find my two kids laughing and playing together. "Hey princess and mini me! Do you guys want to go to Uncle Farkle's for a few hours?" I ask desperately hoping they say yes.

"Yyyyaayyyy!" Christine says jumping up. I pack up a few things for the kids and I drop them off. The hospital is not that far away, only 8 minutes.

Once I got to the hospital, I rushed to the front desk. "Hello, I'm here to see August Matthews." I say calmly. "Alright Sir. He is in room 214, but he is actually having his first surgery currently so he is not in there." The receptionist told me not looking up from his computer screen. "Okay thanks sir." I say and open the door that leads to the labyrinth of a hospital.

After finally arriving at room 214, I slowly open the door. Mrs. Matthews, Mr. Matthews, Josh, and Riley are in there already. Josh and Riley are asleep against each other, and Mr. and Mrs. Matthews are on their phones while quietly sitting in two chairs beside each other. When Mrs. Matthews hears me come in se looks up from her phone. "Hello Lucas, sorry, Riley and Josh fell asleep and Corey and I aren't much entertainment." She says politely. "That's fine Mrs. Matthews, I'll just sit down and look at stuff on my phone." I reply with a light smile.

After about an hour, Riley wakes up, and accidentally wakes Josh up in the process. The nurse comes in not too long after. "Hello. I am here to inform you that August's first surgery went well and he is in recovery currently. He will be wheeled back to the room shortly." She says and turns around and walks away. I look towards Riley, who looks like a deer in headlights.

I'm still leaning against the wall, but Riley walks toward me slowly. She stands in front of me, looking me dead in the eyes. Or as much as she can, considering her forehead comes up to about my chin. "Lucas..." Her voice quivers. "Yes Riles." I answer. "W-will Auggie be okay?" She asks looking at her shoes. I take my index finger and lift her head so she is looking at my eyes again. "I'm sure he will." I say hopeful. She wraps her arms around me and I embrace her small figure.

"Thank you Lucas... you know, for being there for me whenever I needed you." Riley says still hugging me. "No problem Princess, thank you for letting me stay around." I reply.

Maya POV:
After school, I rush home with Farkle and the kids. Farkle knows what happened, and he is very upset as well. We are sitting in the living room talking about our days when Lucas knocks on the door. Well, I didn't know for sure it was him but who else would it be? Farkle opens the door and next thing I know there are 4 kids sitting in the living room.

"Farkle, how long are we keeping them?" I ask. "Don't know; Lucas is going to the hospital to be with Riley." He says plainly. "Okay then." I reply.

Farkle and I help all the kids with their home work, and then finally start ours. "Hey Farkle," I begin. "Yeah Maya." He replies. "We need to visit Auggie soon." I say. "Of course." He says, but I know that it won't be too soon because we can't just drive up with 4 rambunctious kids at the hospital. Well- actually we could but we might be thrown out.

After a while, I was bored and kept thinking of the different scenarios that could happen to Auggie. "I can't take it. Farkle I'm going to visit Auggie." I say standing up. "Okay Maya, just don't be back too late." Farkle replies. "K, I won't." I tell him.

I run to my room to change. I put on a pink Nike t-shirt and grey leggings. I slide on my tennis shoes and braid my hair back. I then put on my black windbreaker and walk out of the apartment.

At the hospital, I walk in and am greeted by the desk man. "Hello, I'm here to see August Matthews." I say. "Hello, sorry August already has 5 visitors in his room currently, and that is the maximum. I can call the room and someone can come out so you can come in." The man says. "Alright, thanks." I reply.

After a few minutes, Corey and Topanga come out. "Hello Maya." Topanga says with a light smile. "Hey Mrs. Matthews." I reply back. "He's in room 214." Mr. Matthews says. "Thanks." I simply say.

I start my journey to room 214. After many turns and an elevator ride, I finally reach my destination. I crack the door open, to find a crying Riley, a sniffling Josh, and a worried Lucas. "Hey," I start. "Hi Maya." Riley says looking towards me. They are all three on the bench, Riley in the middle, and the two boys both have an arm around her. I look at the hospital bed.

I look in the bed, and there, laying silent and still, is my little buddy, August Matthews. I start tearing up instantly. I am standing in the middle of the room, now crying harder and harder. Josh gets up and gives me a friendly hug. "Everything will be okay, alright Maya?" He says calmly. "Yeah, I guess." I say, but my voice is muffled, due to the fact that my head is buried into Josh's chest.
