Chapter 18: Hunter

Dad made us stop at a creek for a drink. That's when I heard it.

My beta, Liam, howling. He found her! Alex! I take off sprinting towards my beta, leaving my dad at the creek.

I howl back at Liam, telling him I'm on my way.

I come bursting through the trees and see Liam sitting over Alex. She is laying down in the dirt. My heart starts racing.

"Hunter she fainted but I think she is ok." Oh thank god,"Here." He tosses me a pair of pants. I shift to my human form and put the pants on.

I walk over to Alex, she is covered in dirt.

"What happened?" I gently start picking her up. I grab her legs and back, she does what she always does when she is in my arms. She curls up and sighs, which makes me smile.

"I heard a heartbeat, she seemed as if she was running for days. She fell and I came up to her in my wolf. I shifted and when she saw me, she fainted. That's when I called you."

"Let's get her home. Liam, get Chase, you and him will do a perimeter check. I want to find these rogues and find out why they took her." He nodded.

I started running with her in my arms towards my house as Liam shifted and went off to get Chase.

"Hunter..." I stop running and look down at her. Her eyes are slightly open, as she is stares up at me.

"Alex it's ok. Your safe now."

"It's ...." Her voice was so weak.

"Alex will get you home, save your strength." She listens to me and closes her eyes, so I continued running.

We made it back to my house within 30 minutes. I opened the door and brought her upstairs to my room. I laid her down. She didn't look to good and neither did her leg.

I grab the phone from the hallway and dial the number.

"Doctor Gatz's office." A nasally voice said on the other line.

"Hi can I please talk to the Doc. It's Hunter Lupus."

"Oh. Hunter. Yes, um one second." I waited a minute and then he came on.

"Hunter what's the problem?" Doc isn't a wolf, but he is a friend of my dad. He always found an interest in werewolves, kinda like a hobby, so now he's part of the pack. He takes care of all our injured wolves, and he is the only one I trust Alex with. I explain to him what happened and he said he would be there in 10 minutes.

"Thanks Doc." I said and hung up. I walk back into my room to check on Alex.

She is laying there in my bed, still wearing the shirt I gave her yesterday. We spent the whole night looking for her. From around 8 last night when we were attacked to now. I look at the time it's almost 6 in the morning. The sun wasn't even out but it's glow lit up the sky. I stand by the windows in my room staring out at the forest, thinking.

Who were those men? Why did they want Alex? What ever it is I will find them and kill them for hurting my mate.

I hear a car pull up into the driveway. That was quick. I walk downstairs and open the door.

"Hunter it's good to see you. How long has it been? Over a year?" He looked exactly the same. He was short guy, only 5"7'. His hair was all grey but all there. He had these scary bright blue eyes that his wife would always say, had her hooked at first sight.

"Yea it's been over a year." I smile, he's a great guy. "Before I went to Alaska."

"Well you have defiantly gotten bigger." He sighed,"Where is she?"

I gesture for him to follow me and we walk upstairs into my room. We walk in and he sets down his briefcase on the floor. I watch as he opens the briefcase, filled with equipment of all kinds. He stops and looks back at me.

"Hunter I would suggest you go outside."

"No I can stay. She is my mate, I will stay with her." He's eyes widen when I say she's my mate. He turns back to Alex and lifts the hair of her neck, covering her mark.

"We will speak more of this later. If you'd like to stay, then stay." I take a seat on a chair by the window. Silently, I watch as Doc tends to Alex's leg and the cuts on her face.

My eye lids slowly close shut, succumbing to the sleep I much needed.

I wake up just as Doc finishes up with Alex, who is now asleep.

"Doc, how is she?" I sit up and wipe the sleep from my eyes.

"She'll be fine. She has to rest and when she wakes up I suggest getting her cleaned up." He says as he packs ups his stuff. I get up.

"Thank you Doc, really it means a lot to me." He stand up and gives me a stern look, "What?"

"Follow me." We walk out of the room, closing my bedroom door behind us. We walk to the kitchen and he takes a seat at the counter.

"Would you like something?" I ask as I walk around the counter.

"A glass of water please." He grabs his head as he says that. I get out a glass and fill it with water, placing it on the counter in front of him.

"Doc you ok?" He looks troubled. He takes a sip of water before answering.

"Hunter, you mated with a human. That's a problem... I've studied werewolves, almost my whole life, and I've never heard of this before. You could die..." He looks up at me his eyes filled with concern.

"I won't. Alex is the one, I know it." He looked back down, thinking."Doc I need your help. I am afraid of what will happen if I try and claim her."

"I don't know, like I said this has never happened before."

"Also, Liam," I pause."I think he mated with a human too. I'm not for sure yet I haven't asked him." He sat there in silence.

"We will continue this later. I will leave now and come back with as much information as I can find. You will bring Liam and his," he paused with the next word, not sure what to call Gen," his mate. I want to see all of you. I will be back around lunch time." I nod and he gets up and walks out the door.
