Chapter 29: Hunter

I emerge from the woods as my mate begins to disappear over the cliff. My wolf takes over.

I shift and jump towards Alex. My wolf just catchs her by her shirt before she falls. Her heart rate is beating at a frightening rate. She turns her head to me, beads of sweat dripping down her face. I slowly pull her up.

The second I place her on the ground she jumps at me. Hugging me and not letting go. I lick her face. My body shaking.

I almost lost my mate. My life. Almost gone with in seconds. My wolf starts whimpering at the thought of her gone. She grabs me tighter as I nozzle my head into her neck.

"I'm sorry. I should have stopped. I should have listened to you." She was crying now, my wolf whimpered wanting her to be happy.

I pull back and stand to my full height. She stands up next to me, whipping the tears from her eyes. I lick her cheek and a smile returns on her face.

That smile could brighten any ones day. She took ahold of the fur on the side of my neck as we walk back to her house.

Alex

We are walking back to my house, Hunter helping me over fallen trees as we walk in silence. One since he can't talk and two because I don't know what to say. I almost died. I'm so stupid. I have to be more careful, but when I was running it felt so... Natural.

I was to busy thinking to notice the uplifted root. I trip and hit the leave covered floor. Hunter whimpers.

"I'm ok Hunter." He starts helping me up when it happens.

Pain. Excruciating pain. Running all throughout my body. I crash back to the ground. Staring up at the trees, gasping for air.

My lungs feel like they are collapsing in on themselves. My nails are digging into the palms of my hands. What is going on?

Hunter is going frantic. He nudges  my shoulder, but I can't say anything. No words come out of my mouth, not even a scream.

My vision starts blurring. I take hard blinks and try to see clearly but it's no use. I blink hard one more time and that was it. I didn't open my eyes again, everything went black.

"Ahhhhhh!" I shoot up and start screaming. My skin is on fire. I feel as if my blood is boiling inside of me. I hear the door slam which pierces my ears .

"Alex, it's ok breathe. Just breathe. DOC!" He puts his hand on my back, trying to comfort me. It's not working.

I hear steps on the hard wood floor from the hallway and I grab my ears. The sound is so loud! What's happening?

"Move Hunter." Doc comes to my side and pushes me down back on my bed. "Now Alex, focus on me ok? Look over here."

I look up at him and he immediately shines a bright light in my eye. I growl at him and he removes the light. Wait growl?

"What... What's happening to me?" My voice is shaky and full of fear.

"You are shifting. You weren't supposed to start transforming till later tonight, just keep calm." My vision starts blurring again. I don't wanna go under again, I don't want to have to wake up screaming. Although my body had different plans because I try to open my eyes again but they are glued shut. I fall into darkness once again.

  Hunter

"Alex? Alex!", her head falls limp and her whole body relaxes.

"Hunter calm down. She is fine." I look at   Doc, noticing how calm he is and that's when I flipped.

"Calm? Calm! How can I stay calm when my mate is writhing in pain and I can't do jack shit to help her?!" My nostrils are flaring, I look back at Doc and begin slowing my breathing. "How long will she be like this?" My words are hard and cold in my mouth.

"She will most likely shift next time she wakes up." My wolf howls at the idea of our mate being one of us, the Doc notices my happiness and continues. "Hunter she will be in the most pain of her life before she shifts. All her bones in her body will have to break in order for her wolf to take form. The blood inside of her is all werewolf now, but the rest of the transformation will occur tonight. You will not be able to help her. She must survive through it."

My hairs stand up on the back of my neck hearing that last part.

"Survive?" He nods.

"She must be able to survive the excruciating pain of her whole body being broken and then put back together again. Her mothers side of the family all had to go through this, some unfortunately not surviving."

"What? What do you mean not surviving? What are the chances she will die?" My wolf howls in pain at the idea of our mate dead. We would not be able to live without her.

He sighs and motions for us to exit Alex's room. We are in the hallway and he closes the bedroom door behind him.

"The chances are unpredictable. Her mother lived through it but her sister, Emily, died when she shifted. It is hard to say what will happen. The worst pain imaginable happens the last time she wakes."

The air seems to be getting harder to breathe. I feel as if my throat is swelling, not allowing any air to reach my lungs.

She might or might not survive? No. I need answers! It can't be that random. I grab onto the railing of the stairs to steady myself. I've never felt this feeling before. Like the whole world is collapsing in on me and that I'm slowly losing my mate.
