Chapter 20: Hunter

I wake up to my phone buzzing from inside my pocket. I slowly get up, unwrapping my arms that were around Alex. She just sighs and falls back asleep. Too cute. I get off the bed and walk out my bed room door.

"Hey Liam."

"Hey, I heard you got the Doc to check on Alex. How is she?"

"Yea she's going to be fine. How are you and Chase doing? Find anything yet?"

"No no yet, but we will keep looking." Remembering what Doc said about wanting to meet up later, I blurted out the question.

"Is Gen your mate?" He went silent for a bit, then answered.

"Yes... But I haven't marked her yet."

"What? Why?"

"It's not that I'm not sure if she is my mate or not, I know she is. It's just I'm worried nothing like this has ever happened before..."

"I know Liam. I told the Doc. He is going to help us but I need you to bring Gen over here."

"I... I can't."

"Why not?" He sighed

"She doesn't know about us yet."

"Well tell her quick because Doc is coming after lunch."

"I'm... I'm scared Hunter.. What if she rejects me?"

"Listen Liam she will listen, break it to her slowly. If it is truly meant to be then everything will be fine."

"Yea your right..."

"Now go. Doc will be here soon."

"Ok. Thanks Hunter."

"No problem. I'll see you later. Bye." I hang up and walk back into the room, to find Alex sitting up waiting for me.

"Hey beautiful." I smile at her very adorable bed head. She notices me starring and blushes in embarrassment while trying to tame her crazy hair.

"Hi. Who were you talking to?"

"Oh Liam. He and Gen will be over shortly, we are having a meeting with the pack doctor to talk about our situation." She nodded and looked down. Something is bothering her."Alex? What's wrong?" She sighed.

"I ... I ... It's not that easy to say... I mean" she paused, trying to chose her words, "I don't know how I can tell you."

"Whatever it is Alex you can tell me." She looked back up at me, her eyes full of sorrow. She opened her mouth, about to speak when we hear a car door shut outside.

"The Doc is here. Can it wait till later?" She nodded and I walked towards her. I slide my hands under her legs and around her back, picking her up very carefully.

I placed her on the couch when we got downstairs and opened the door.

"Hey Doc."

"Hello Hunter." He looks past me at Alex. "Nice to see you up and about. How are you feeling?" He walks in towards Alex, examining her leg.

"I'm doing ok I guess. It hurts a little but nothing to bad. When will I be able to walk?" He shook his head.

"I'm not sure exactly. It's a pretty bad bite, maybe..." He pauses as he thinks, "About a month or so. Depending on how fast you heal it might change. Oh I forgot to introduce myself, Dr. James Gatz or Doc for short." He held out his hand to her. She shakes his hand and introduces herself.

"Alex Woods." When she said her name he sort of stiffened, but she didn't notice. "Um thank you by the way for helping me." She gave him a sympathetic smile.

"Anything for Hunter's ... Mate." He turned to me. "Where is Liam and his?"

"They should be here soon." Just as I say that a car pulls into my driveway. I see Liam get out and open the door for Gen, who looks on edge. I give Liam credit, he is literally the best beta in the world, he  picked up Gen, told her about us, and brought her to my place all within a span of 10 minutes.   I open the door for them. Gen walks right, in making a bee line for Alex. Liam comes close and whispers into my ear.

"I told her and she hasn't said a word since." I turn to him. He looked unhappy, which is unusual for him since he is always happy.

"It'll be fine don't worry, come on Docs waiting." We both walk in and take seats in arm chairs across from the Doc. The girls on a couch together. I nod for him to begin.

"The reason I called you all here is extremely important. Now I have searched all my files and I found a couple of books that might help. One books stated that human-wolf mates are formed to kill off bloodlines. It is made and fated by the Goddess to kill off that family by mating the future heirs with humans, thus breaking the pure blood line of wolves. Another, more disturbing book, stated that it is the Goddesses way of punishing wolves who created horrible sins in previous lives." He must have read the look on my face because he quickly reassured us," But that is highly unlikely. Um, more of a myth really. Now the last book, that dates back to early werewolf history, said something entirely different. In times of hardship, the Goddess will mate humans and werewolves to bond the two species together. Creating peace between the two. We all know that werewolves have had issues with humans in the past, but it's never been this bad. More and more wolves are attacking humans and taking advantage of them, while the humans continue to try and find us. This would make sense in our case." He stops so we all can process. Then Alex speaks up.

"But in this human-wolf bond, will the human turn into a werewolf, when um..." She must have forgotten the term.

"When claimed." I chime in. Doc pauses then answers.

"Well in her case," pointing at Gen, "it would be difficult to tell. She may or may not shift. But in you case Alex..."

"Wait what do you mean my case, her case? Aren't we the same?" Doc gets a confused look.

"You never knew?" Doc questions.

"Knew? Knew what?" Alex's eyes were frantic, begging for answers.

"Your father was a werewolf in our pack. He left when he was very young and married your mother. She was a strange breed of wolf... I figured you knew."
