Your life couldn't possibly get any worse. All the people you were supposed to be able to trust have either betrayed you or abandoned you. There is nothing left for you here and there is no longer any reason to stay. If your heart wasn't so broken and numb, you might cry over all you have lost. But there are no more tears. There is just nothing.

Your boss has told you that your personal life has affected you to the point where you are no longer performing your job. It is actually a relief when she says she has to let you go. You really don't care. Driving to the airport with one small suitcase, you decide you will take the first flight you can afford to "anywhere." The destination doesn't matter. Your heart thumps weakly as you park your car in the airport garage and toss the keys in the trash can.

Standing at the ticket counter of the first airline you come to, you purchase a one way ticket on Alaskan Airlines to Juneau, Alaska. The ticket agent looks at your small carry on and asks if you have any other luggage.
"No." You answer dully. Everything you felt you would need fit in that small bag. Everything else you left behind you didn't care about any more.

On the plane you are seated next to a muscular bearded man and and a young girl. You assume she is his daughter even though he doesn't look barely old enough to have a daughter her age. But they are so comfortable with each other, laughing and joking. You notice with a pang in your heart that they have similar smiles. They must be related. Their smiles bring back an angry memory that washes over you like a dirty tide.

You turn your head to face the window and silently curse them for their happiness. "Just wait," you think. "When you trust him completely and then he yanks the rug out from under your life? You'll understand then that life really and truly sucks." You close your eyes to tune them out.

Arriving in Juneau, you pick up your suitcase and begin looking for the exit to ground transportation. You see the man from the plane and the young girl running to meet their family. There are at least seven family members who have come to meet them. They all look so happy to see each other. You can see genuine love and joy on every face. Your eyes mist and your hands begin to shake with hurt and regret for all that you have lost; for all that was taken from you.

As you dip your head and fight back bitter tears, your suitcase slips from your grasp. The bearded man quickly moves to your side and retrieves your bag. Your head jerks up, surprised. You take the bag from his hand and as your fingers touch, it feels like a tiny electric current runs through you. You look up into his eyes, startled at the sensation. His dark blue eyes are kind and gentle, but there is no way you will trust him. Or anyone.

"Just leave it." You snap, irritated.
"Are you sure?" He asks with a slightly mocking tone. "It didn't look to me like you had a good grip on it." He stares unblinking at you, frown lines etching his brow.

"Yes, I'm fine. Just leave it." You wish he would go away. You aren't ready to feel anything yet. As you stand facing each other, staring at each other, his eyes look deep into your soul. He finally sees something in your eyes that makes his features soften. He rubs absently at his reddish brown beard.

"My name is Bam Bam Brown. You can call me Bam." He tells you. As if you care. But... there is something about him. "That's my family over there." He points to the large group of smiling people. "They're my mom, dad and my brothers and sisters." He steps as close to you as he dares.

"Why don't you come have lunch with us? Have you been to Juneau before?" At the shake of your head, Bam takes your suitcase from your hand. "I don't know what you've been through." He whispers, leaning close to you. "But you are wearing your pain all over your face." You blink rapidly, trying to hold back the tears that have been building all day. Bam places his hand lightly on the small of your back and gently steers you toward his family.
