Enjoying the View

The walk in the woods was peaceful. Bam wanted to show you the spot he had picked out for the new house he was building.

"It's not too much further." He spoke loudly and tossed the words over his shoulder.

"It's fine." You smiled at the back of his head. "I'm enjoying the view."

You really were enjoying the view. The woods were still bright green even in mid-winter and the light dusting of snow on the ground gave everything a bright clean glow. Your view of the back of Bam wasn't bad either. His short wool coat covered his shoulders and back, but you could still admire his strong, straight legs as he tromped resolutely toward his destination.

"Watch out for this stump." Bam warned and threw out a hand to help you over.

His hand was warm from being in his pocket and you felt his heat even through your soft wool gloves. Or was the heat coming from you? You smiled a bit to yourself as you squeezed his fingers and remembered his proposal from the night before. He had been nervous but sure of your answer and when you nodded yes, his grin had exploded over his face.

Now holding his hand, you felt the pressure on your finger where the engagement ring rested like an already familiar friend. The diamond was bigger than you had expected. That had been a surprise. Bam wasn't a fancy guy.

"I don't want there to be any doubt that you are more valuable to me than anything else I could own." Bam had said and locked his dark blue eyes on you. You were speechless with emotion and could only nod your head yes, again and again.

With your hand in his, you followed him into a freshly cut clearing. Piles of damp leaves and branches were heaped to one side. On the far end, a large stump of a felled tree still remained. Bam led you to it, picking his way carefully over the exposed tree roots and he settled himself down on the soft wood. There was plenty of room for you to sit beside him, but Bam drew you down on his lap and wrapped his arms around you.

His lips were on yours before you were fully aware what was happening. That was always the way it was with Bam. He was thoughtful and methodical but with you, he was impulsive and sensual and you loved all sides to him. His soft mustache brushed against your cheek as a soft moan of pleasure escaped your mouth and slid directly into his. You yanked at your gloves, wanting to feel his skin with your fingers. One glove slipped off easily, but the glove on your left hand caught on the diamond. You struggled a little with it and Bam, feeling your struggle, pulled back and looked curiously at you.

"Baby girl, what are you doing?" He was almost smiling.

"I'm fighting a glove." You laughed and shoved your left hand into his face.

Bam shook his head and with a little eye roll, he gently pulled the glove away from the diamond and off of your hand.

"You're going to have to get used to doing that." He said with a bigger smile.

"I will." You promised and leaned in to finish the kiss.

"Wait." Bam turned his face away from yours and toward the clearing.

The sensation of loss was an ache that went deeper than you could have imagined. You had been kissing Bam for almost a year and you knew that after you were married you would be kissing him for years to come. But every kiss from him brought you to the brink and you never wanted it to stop.

"I want you to imagine this with me." He pointed a finger toward the clearing and the water just beyond the trees. "This is where the front of the house will be, with the front porch right here." He gestured. "The back of the house will have a wall of windows so that we can look out at the water from our bedroom and kitchen and I'll build you a porch where you can sit outside when the weather is nice and enjoy the view."

You watched his soft lips and his happy eyes as he spoke. You wanted nothing more than to take his face in your hands and tell him, "I don't need any of that. I don't need this big ring and I don't need a big house. I just need you."

But this was all part of his dream. His dream was to be with you, to live in a home he built with his own hands, and to live a life the two of you would carve out together. Now it was your dream too. It became your dream the minute Bam spoke his dream to you.

"I love it." You said and pressed your back to his chest and followed his finger and his gaze with your eyes.

"What do you love about it?" He asked and you knew he was searching to be sure you were happy.

"I love the plan, I love the location, I love the view, and..." You turned in his arms to face him. "And I love you for wanting all this for us. You know I don't need it."

"I know. So tell me what you love about the view." Bam said softly.

You felt Bam holding his breath as he waited for your response. This was his main concern. He had selected this spot in these woods on this island and he had to be sure you would be happy there. Shifting a little on his lap, you turned your head toward the clearing and beyond that to the ocean and you let out a long and contented sigh.

"I love that it's a view of the ocean and the sky through our trees...

I love that it's a view through the windows of a house that you built just for us...

I love that it's a view we can enjoy inside or out...

And I love that it's going to be the second thing I'll see every morning." You planted a quick kiss on Bam's cheek then continued. "Right after I open my eyes and see your face."

The smile on his face told you he was convinced. He had made the right choice and you were more than happy.

"Are you ready to go back to the trapper shack now?" He asked as he jostled you a bit on his knee.

You shook your head and held him tight and gazed at your future.

"No. Let's sit here a while longer and enjoy the view."
