Truthfully, you felt kind of bad about the way you had treated Bam. He was only trying to be helpful and show you how to use the sharpened axe. But he had instructed you over and over and you finally got tired of him repeating the same thing so you had screamed right in his face.
"Leave me alone, Bam! I can take care of myself!"

His eyes had gotten rounder than you had ever seen and his eyebrows shot all the way up to his hairline. You had never raised your voice to Bam and your own eyes widened as you realized his mom and dad were standing close by. Surely they heard you. They had to be wondering what kind of woman Bam had chosen to marry. You had presented yourself to the family as a sweet gentle girl, eager and willing to learn all you needed to live in the bush. Bam knew you weren't all sugar and spice, but this was the first time you had raised your voice to him.

"Fine." He growled through gritted teeth. "Don't come looking to me for help when you've chopped off all your fingers."

When Bam stomped away toward the trapper shack, you threw your head back and sighed. Why couldn't you have held your tongue and let him show you how to use the axe? You stared up at the tall cedar trees and blew out a breath.

When you dropped your head back down, you suddenly lost your grip on the heavy axe in your hands and it fell, tumbling end over end toward the ground. Just before it hit, you jumped backwards with a startled yelp. Bam turned around at the sound and you looked up at him. Your heart was in your throat but you were so embarrassed you could barely meet his eyes.

You watched his face as you held your breath. The staring standoff lasted so long that you thought you might pass out from lack of oxygen. Then Bam started walking toward you.

The first thing you wanted to do was run and hide. In your mind you could already hear all the 'I told you so's' he would hurl at you. And if you had to hear him say, 'respect the danger' one more time, you were sure you would EXPLODE!

The second thing you wanted to do was cry. It was a weak, girly thing to do, but in that moment, you were feeling pretty weak and girly. So the second thing won out. By the time he was standing in front of you, his jaw tight, the hot tears were streaming down your face.

"Don't try to make me feel sorry for you by crying." Bam grumbled as he reached down to pick up the axe.

You waited while he laid the heavy tool against a nearby tree and then he returned to stand right in front of you. His blue eyes were angry and he stared right at you with an expression that made you cry even harder. You wanted to stop crying, but you couldn't.

"Stop it." Bam said more softly that time. His hands had been balled into fists and you blinked through your tears as you saw his fingers start to relax.
"I almost chopped off my toes!" You wailed and threw yourself at Bam, wrapping your arms around his neck. Your hands tangled in his long curls and you crushed him to you.

Bam's chest shook and you knew he was laughing at you. "Better your toes than your fingers. I kinda like your fingers. Your toes are sorta stumpy."
You gave his hair a yank and felt as his arms moved around you to hold you close.

"Next time I need you to listen to me and to respect the danger. OK?" He spoke with his mouth on your hair, his breath warm.
"Ka-Boom." You whispered.
"What?"
"Nothing important." You slid your hands along his soft beard.

Bam leaned back to look in your eyes. "I mean it."
"I promise." You smiled and gave him a soft kiss on the lips. And then you remembered something. "Hey? What was that you said about my toes?"

Bam didn't answer but walked over to pick up the axe and heft it over his shoulder. His smile was sweet and sexy and it really didn't matter to you anymore what he had said about your toes. He held out one hand to you and you willingly reached for him and began walking beside him to your cabin.

"Nothing important, baby. Let's go home."
