He always insisted you call him Josh. And you did, because you loved him and that's what he wanted. But in your heart and in your mind he would always be Joshua. The feel of his name in your mouth was like a soft waterfall; cool and musical. Josh seemed too short of a name for him.
His family called him Bam. That also was too small of a name to capture all that he was. Maybe you were making too much of it all. If he saw himself as Josh, then that's who you wanted him to be. You wanted him exactly the way he was. But in the depth of your heart he was always 'Joshua' and he was everything you wanted.
"I want to hear the rest, Josh." You said as he laid the old violin to one side.
"Maybe later." He smiled.
"Please. Josh...u...a." You stretched out the sound of his name until you felt the sweet tingle on the tip of your tongue. When Joshua laughed and picked up the violin again, you thought he would play more for you. But instead, he beckoned you with his finger. You stood up from where you had been sitting on the floor and settled yourself down on his lap. With your back to him, he positioned the chinrest of the violin under your chin and handed you the bow.
"Just don't poke me in the eye." He smiled and kissed your shoulder.
"I promise. What do I do first?" You wanted to turn and look into his blue eyes but you didn't want the violin to fall from your chin. So you let your eye focus on his hands. The knuckles were hard and calloused from punching his heavy bag and from working hard with his brothers. But his hands and his touch were gentle, too. Joshua was always gentle with you."I'll do the fingering with my left hand and you hold the bow flat against the strings like this." Joshua held your trembling right hand and guided the bow onto the strings. "Why is your hand shaking?" He tilted his head to look into your face.
"I'm nervous. What if I mess up? You'll laugh at me and I'd have to smack you and then we'd have to stop and tend to your bruises and I'm not sure I want to deal with all that." You bumped your head back against his and smiled.
"You'll do fine. And if you smack me, I couldn't smack you back, cuz you're a girl. I'd have to tickle you. And then there would be all this yelling and screaming and the police would come and you're right. We don't want to have to deal with all that."
Joshua moved your hair off your shoulder and put his cheek close to yours. "Here we go." He nodded.
When he pressed the bow in your hand down on the violin strings and stroked forward, you were amazed at the dark, clear tone coming from the instrument. Joshua pulled your hand backwards and up and the dark tone changed to a light, bright sound that made you want to cry. You blinked back the tears and watched as his long slim fingers worked at the strings on the neck of the violin. One finger, then two, then both sliding down the tight strings.
"We're making music, Josh." You wanted to yell the words you were so excited.
"Yes, we are." He agreed."It's so beautiful." His hand continued to guide yours back and forth across the strings as they cried out their haunting melody. You never wanted the music to stop.
"You are so beautiful." He whispered close to your ear.
"Josh...u...a." You breathed. His hand holding yours was suddenly gone and Joshua pulled the violin away from your chin. His arm pulled you around to him and his lips were firm on yours. The kiss was even more beautiful than the music and you never wanted it to stop either. When he pulled his head away and smiled into your face, it seemed you could still hear the soft strains of the violin in your ear. The sound combined with the feel of him near you and the look of love in his eyes was almost more than you could bear.
"I love it when you call me Joshua." He brought your fingers to his lips and kissed them gently.
"I knew it." You smiled. "Let's play some more, Joshua."
