The ride on the skiff was quiet and peaceful. The scenery around you was so fresh and beautiful. You sat facing Bam as he piloted the skiff and you kept sneaking looks at his profile as he turned his head from side to side, watching the waves. He said it would take between forty-five minutes to an hour to get to their land and secretly you hoped it would take longer. Bam was so beautiful that you could stare at him for hours.

But with a tiny ache in your heart, you tore your gaze away for a second to look back at Titus and Birdy. Bam's sister was looking off to one side so you leaned over and made eye contact with Titus who was sitting behind her. His brow was furrowed and he was clutching the sides of the skiff tightly. When you finally caught his eye, he stared intently at you and mouthed the words,

"I have to go pee."

You smiled sweetly at your friend and motioned with your hand to the expanse of water on the left side of the boat and then to the right side of the boat.

"Ha Ha." He intoned.

Birdy turned around at the sound of his voice and the transformation on his face was miraculous. A huge smile lit up his features and he leaned forward toward Birdy and whispered.

"I'm serious. Marry me. I've got good genes so our babies will be beautiful and strong."

He gave her his best smile and thought he hadn't been heard by anyone else. But he didn't realize how his voice would carry over the open water.

"Titus..." Bam warned and Birdy burst out laughing as she turned her face away, slightly embarrassed. Titus grabbed his chest as her laugh shot arrows into his heart. You shook your head and rolled your eyes at him and then focused your gaze back on Bam for the rest of the ride. The view was spectacular.

The island was much larger than you had expected and much more rustic. Since you were only planning to stay there a couple of days, you figured you could handle roughing it a little. Especially with Bam nearby, you could handle just about anything. He was quiet as usual on the walk from the beach to the homestead. His personality was going to take some getting used to. He didnt talk very much and it took some doing to pry information out of him. He seemed very happy to be with you and you hoped eventually he would open up and let you see even more of what he was like. The few times on the flight to Juneau you had hit upon a subject he loved, you had seen his eyes light up and his smile appear. It was a smile you couldn't wait to see again and couldn't get enough of.

Birdy took the lead and she walked so fast, Titus had a hard time keeping up with her. He struggled to hang on to his carryon and his duffle bag as he manueveered over the uneven ground.

"Do you need some help with your bag?" She finally asked him with a little smile.

"No...I think I can handle it." He answered and promptly dropped his duffel bag into a pile of mud.

"Gimme." Birdy hefted the heavy bag over her shoulder and continued on with her fast-paced walk. The bag didn't seem to slow her down a bit.

"I love her." Titus turned and whispered directly in your face and you couldn't help but be happy for him even though you heard a low growling noise coming from Bam who was at the rear of your little group.

"It's really beautiful here." You slowed your pace and let Bam catch up to you.

"Yeah. We love it here. Except for the bears, it's quiet and peaceful." He smiled down at you and your cheeks began to flush with heat.

You were glad Titus had jogged a little ahead to walk next to Birdy so he didn't hear the remark about the bears. You really had to convince him that an Alaskan adventure would be amazing and wonderful. He didn't need to know about the bears just yet.

"Bam?" You stopped him by tugging on his jacket. "Thanks for inviting us here. I still can't believe you're doing this. I am a naturally impulsive person so this isn't unusual for me. I'll tell you someday about the summer I spent as a traveling mine. You laugh. But being a really funny mine is hard work. Anyway... you seem much more careful and cautious than I am. So I have to ask. How many times have you done this? How many strange girls have you brought to your island before?

Bam turned his head and stared up at the tall trees, thinking carefully. He brought one hand up and began to tick off on his fingers; one...two... Then he absently scratched at his reddish beard, figuring out the numbers. Finally, he looked back down at you and said, "Just you."

"You are a rat, you know that?" You laughed and smacked him on the arm and were taken completely by surprise when he turned to the side and bumped you with his hip.

"Yes. And you're a biter so I think we're even now." He grinned.

"I promise not to bite you again." Bam frowned and stuck out his bottom lip at your promise. You raised your eyebrows and laughed at this silly side of him and quickly changed your mind. "OK. I'll only bite you if you really deserve it." When Bam slipped one arm around your waist and gave your hip a little pat, you thought you had died and gone to heaven.

Walking the last few feet on the path, you finally came to the clearing and saw the large main cabin.

"Wow. That's a lot bigger than I expected." You smiled up at Bam.

Your smile faltered a bit when he saw his family and immediately dropped his arm from your waist.

"Ok..." You thought to yourself. Trying not to be too disappointed, you reminded yourself that you and Bam had only known each other for a few hours.

"Come on." He said briefly and walked toward the group who you realized were all clustered around Titus.

"What happened?!" You dropped your small bag and ran to Titus, edging between two guys who must have been Bam's brothers.

Titus was sitting on a log bench, his head in his hands and he was sobbing uncontrollably. Birdy was standing next to him, one hand resting gently on his shoulder and the expression on her face was priceless. She was trying her best not to laugh but tears were streaming from her eyes.

"Titus. It'll be ok. You'll be fine." She spoke softly to him and shook her head briskly at her family to try to keep them from laughing, too.

"No. It won't be fine!" He wailed.

You looked worriedly from Titus's heaving shoulders to Birdy's face, pink from trying to hold back her giggles. Bam pressed his way past his brothers.

"Move it." He said roughly to a very muscular guy with dark curly hair. "Titus, what's wrong with you, man?"

Titus lifted his head and everyone could see the redness of his eyes and the tearstains on his face. He looked briefly at Birdy but dropped his head immediately in anguish. "Arrrrggghh!" He moaned dramatically.

"Oh, please." You walked up behind him and slapped him hard on the back of the head. "Stop embarrassing me or I will strangle you in your sleep."

Titus suddenly lifted his head and sniffed back his tears. He wiped his eyes with the heels of his hands and ignoring the grins of everyone around him, he looked solemnly at Birdy.

"So, only the girls use the outhouse?"

"That's true." Birdy answered gently.

"And I am a man. A real man." He waggled his dark eyebrows up and down and Birdy bit her lip to keep from laughing.

"If you say so."

"And you know I love you, right?" Titus nodded his head to encourage her to agree.

"I know you're insane, yes." She replied sweetly.

"So, if I go pee in the woods and a bear eats me, will you promise to cremate me and keep my ashes with you forever?"

By this time the family was roaring with laughter and even Bam had to smile. But Birdy kept her composure and held up one hand.

"Titus, I promise to follow you and protect you anytime you have to go in the woods. All you have to do is call my name and I'll be there in less than five seconds with my rifle ready. OK?"

Titus nodded his head and smiled. And no one was at all surprised when he said,

"I have to go pee."
