Focused as you were on Bam, you didn't realize Titus wasn't behind you as you stepped off the ferry in Hoonah. You and Bam had walked halfway down the street toward town when you heard a loud yell behind you.

"Hold up, guys!! Wait for me!" Titus yelled as he ran huffing and puffing up to you. "I was in the bathroom. I can't believe you just left me!" His normally smiling face was scrunched into a frown. His short dark hair was sticking up in damp spikes all over his head and you felt a twinge of guilt for forgetting to check the bathroom for him before you and Bam walked out.

"Sorry, bro. Bam and I started talking and I just assumed you were behind me."
"You assumed." He narrowed his eyes at you and pulled out his oversized knit hat and jammed it on his head. He opened his mouth to say more but shut it quickly. His eyes widened and a deep breath whooshed out of him.

"Oh, stop breathing on me!" You waved your hand in front of your face to dispel his breath and followed his gaze to see what he was staring at.

The young girl walking toward you appeared to be about twenty-one years old and had long dark hair and glasses. Her smile was big as she approached your small group and with a little jolt, you realized she was smiling at Bam. Her long hair was decorated with colorful hair clips and as she got closer you saw one said "Ka" and the other said "Pow." Glancing at Bam, you saw him drop his bag and throw open his arms, ready to embrace her. Glancing at Titus, you saw his jaw drop open and you slid you hand under his jaw to shut it.

"Uhhhh." He mumbled and you turned slowly back to Bam, jealous and ready to hear the worst.
"Guys, this is my sister Birdy." Bam was smiling bigger than you had seen him smile that whole day. His love for her was evident in his smile and his voice.
"Hi." She reached out to shake your hand and you heard the jangling of a dozen colorful bracelets on her arm.
"Hello!" Titus said loudly and Birdy blinked a little at the sound of his voice. "I'm Titus. You're gorgeous. Marry me. Now. Right here. I have cash. I can take care of you."

The silence was deafening. Bam's frown was deep. Your laugh was nervous and you pried Titus' hand from Birdy's and stepped between them.
"Ignore him, please. He's harmless." You smiled reassuringly at her.
"Hmmm." You heard the sound coming from Bam but you didn't want to look at him just yet. It was clear he was protective of his sister and Titus was still gaping at her with his mouth open.

"Birdy." You smiled and placed a hand on her arm, turning her away from Titus and closer to Bam. "We just met your brother on the plane and he hasn't told me everything about his family. But how did you wind up with the name Birdy? Do you like birds?" You smiled and hoped she would forget Titus was hovering just inches away.
"No..." She looked over at Bam then back at you. "My name is Snowbird. So Birdy is just a nickname."
"That's a beautiful name." You said honestly.
"A beautiful name for a beautiful girl." Titus said softly and Bam stopped suddenly and turned to face him.

"Titus. Back off. That's my sister." His expression was serious and you could see Titus was torn. He wanted to stay close to Birdy and let her know he was interested, but he didn't want to make Bam mad and possibly not get to go to his island. You could almost see the wheels turning in his head as he thought.
"Right..." Titus smiled and gave Bam a thumb's up. "Got it. No problem, dude."

By the time the four of you made it to the other side of the dock where the small skiff waited, the tension between Bam and Titus had diminished. Birdy was talkative and funny and except for the occasional heavy sigh from Titus, he was quiet. Bam had explained that he had invited you to spend a few days with them on their island. You were not completely surprised to see Birdy glance over at Titus when Bam said that and you saw her cheeks rise in a slight smile. Titus was a handsome guy if you liked green eyes and pointy noses.

When he saw the small skiff that would take you to the island, Titus tried his best not to show his concern. You were busy trying not to blush as Bam grabbed you around the waist and lifted you onto the small boat. His blue eyes met yours and he licked his lips as he looked at you.

The thought struck you that all your dreams of what an Alaskan adventure would be like didn't include meeting a gorgeous man on the first day and sailing with him to his own island. Bam was quieter than any of the men you had dated in Kansas. His eyes spoke more than his lips and you couldn't take your eyes off of his as his hands lingered on your hips, steadying you in the small skiff.

You hadn't let yourself think before about Bam's possible feelings for you. The two of you had simply fit together and you didn't feel any fear or trepidation about going to a remote place with him. Meeting his sister who had apparently piloted the boat on her own from the island to Hoonah made you begin to wonder about the whole family. Were they all that independent and fearless? But as you were helping Titus into the skiff, ignoring his slight whiny moans, you overheard as Bam leaned close to Birdy and spoke.

"What in the world made you think you should meet me here all by yourself?" Bam's deep voice was edged with concern but also anger.
"I'm perfectly capable of manning the skiff by myself with no problem. I'm here aren't I?" She looked Bam in the eye boldly.
"We'll talk about this later." Bam said through gritted teeth and you saw Birdy shrug her shoulders in a 'who cares' attitude.

You understood the concern Bam had for his sister. But you also understood the independence Birdy deserved. As Bam settled himself on the seat near the motor, you met his eye. His frown slowly disappeared as he looked at you and when his smile appeared, you reached out and touched his knee softly.
"You're a good brother." You said quietly.
"Thanks." He replied. "But I'm afraid I'm not such a good friend."
"Why would you say that?"
"Because I didn't tell Titus we don't have a bathroom. Only the woods and an outhouse."

Thankfully, Titus didn't hear that part of the conversation. He had leaned forward and had his nose pressed right against Birdy's hair, inhaling deeply.
"What are you doing?" Birdy whipped her head around to face Titus and tried to sound angry. But you saw the smile on her face and so did Bam.

"Cut that out!" Bam yelled and Birdy turned back around, her grin huge.
