You were eagerly looking forward to Bam coming over to spend the day with you. Living in town, you knew it was a long boat ride for him from his family's island. He had to leave the island as soon as it was light so that he could have as much time as possible with you. But you also knew he was always willing to make the long trip to see you.

Even though neither of you had said the words yet, you knew you loved him and you were certain that he loved you. You saw it in his eyes when he spoke to you, and you saw it in his smile that never left his face when you were together.

Grabbing a light jacket off the hook near the door, you stepped outside onto your small porch. You had long ago stopped waiting for him inside. Watching him walk down the street toward you was now one of your favorite ways to start your day with Bam.

Your excitement built as you finally saw him round the corner at the end of the street. Walking to the edge of the porch, you waved your arm the minute he was in sight. Even from the distance, you could see his smile. He lifted his hand in a small wave and hurried to meet you.

After a very passionate greeting that ended with a deep kiss, Bam stepped back and held you at a distance.
"I was thinking that it's time for you to come with me to Brown Town. You can see where I live and meet my family." He spoke the words like it was a simple easy thing. You laughed and moved toward him again, nestling your face in his neck, loving the feel of his soft beard on your cheek.
"Yeah, maybe we'll do that next time. But since you're here now, why don't you come on in."

Maybe he wouldn't remember what you said the last time he invited you to his place.
He pulled back and stared at you. His blue eyes seemed to take on a darker hue as he tried to figure you out.
"This is the second time I've asked you to come with me and this is the second time you've put me off."
"Is it?" You hedged, looking away from him.
"If you don't want to meet my family, or if you don't want to take this relationship any further, just tell me now."

Bam's eyes searched your face and you were afraid to look him in the eye. But you couldn't let him think you didn't love him or want to take things further.
"I can't swim." You finally whispered with your head down. Bam tilted your chin up so that you were looking at him. His smile always took your breath away and this time was no exception.

"You don't need to know how to swim. You will be wearing a life vest and I will have my eye on you the whole time. I've been piloting boats my whole life and I've never lost anyone yet."
"But I'm afraid of being out on the water."
"There's nothing to be afraid of Sweetheart."

His deep voice was gentle and his hand stroking your jawline was soft. You knew what he said was true. He and his family have been in and around boats their whole lives and they know how to be safe on the water. But it didn't stop your stomach from clenching and rolling like a three-ring circus had set up in there.

"Do you love me?" Bam asked you suddenly.
"Yes." You answered without hesitation.
"Do you trust me?"
"Yes." You really did trust him. It was the water you had the problem with.
"Then come with me." He held your gaze until you nodded, yes.

Standing on the dock looking at the small red skiff, it looked so small and insignificant in the huge expanse of water. Bam had tossed his jacket and your backpack into the small boat, making it sway slightly. Beads of sweat popped out on your forehead as you watched him hitch up his pants and move confidently from the front to the back of the skiff. When he finally stopped and looked up at you, the shock on his face was clear. You were trembling with fear and your skin has gone ashen.

"I can't do this." You started backing away from the edge of the dock. Bam immediately leaned forward to snag you by the coat, making the boat rock and sway even more.

"Stop it!" You yelled and batted his hand away, finally plopping yourself down on the hard wood of the pier. You needed to get as close to the ground as possible to stop feeling like everything was moving. Bam stepped out of the boat and sat on the wooden boards beside you.

He was so strong and never seemed to be afraid of anything. You were disappointed in yourself but also a little mad at him. If he hadn't pushed for you to go to the island, he would never have known your weakness.

"Look." He slipped his arm around your waist and kissed your temple. "You don't have to come with me today. We can stay here in town and try this again another day. Whenever you're ready."

You looked over at Bam and studied his face carefully. He had gotten right in your face enough times saying "Just do it!" so that you knew those weren't the words he really wanted to say. But the fact that he was willing to hold back on his true feelings just to give you what you needed, changed something inside you. If he was willing to change for you, you were willing to change for him.

"I want to go to Brown Town today." You held onto his shoulder as you pushed yourself up from the dock. Your knees were still a little weak but your resolve was strong.

"Are you sure you want to do this?" Bam stood to his feet, brushing the dust off his jeans.
"No. I'm not sure." You laughed. "But I love you and I trust you and I want to go with you."
"I love you too, girl." His mouth covered yours and his kiss made you even more determined to go.

"Alright. Let's go." Bam reached his hand out to you and you kept your eyes on his as you stepped confidently into the skiff.
