Spoilers ahead! I have warned you. Don't move on if you haven't played Undertale or just don't care. Also, this is all my opinion. I would not like to start a flame war, but I'm open to a friendly argument. Also, I have a shortened few sentence description in the bottom that may just be all you need to read...
--------Alright then, he comes my thoughts/ideas/thesis thing:
So this is going to be about the Genocide Protagonist in Undertale, who the community has named 'Chara' although I believe the official name is whatever you put in as the fallen humans name, and kind of who I think she/he is as a character, or more precisely, what character I think Chara is the same as. In most ways it's just a symbol. But as a character, I think the character Chara is most similar to, is the character you play as in an online first person shooter games multiplayer, like COD. Typically they don't have a name other than what you decide to name them. They have infinite lives and respawns. They both kill everyone in there way without ever thinking about who those people may be. You see the similarities? In other words, what Chara could be is a symbol of a modern desensitized gamer. It calls itself the embodiment of your Level and Experience Points and stats. And I know Sans calls it Level of Violence and Execution points. But to Chara, it is still level and experience points. It has no real emotions, and a personality is almost nonexistent. It just wants to get stronger, and the only emotion it ever shows in the game is a happiness when it has the chance to gain experience points. It doesn't care at all that its killing monsters. In fact, it doesn't even think about the fact it's killing them. It just does it for the eventual level ups and the reward that comes with that. It even says that that feeling is itself. It's not even inherently evil. Chara isn't any worse than wanting to get to max level in Call of Duty. I mean, you're doing the same things. In both of them you have to kill as many people as you can. And you're willing to try as many times as it takes, whether it be fighting Sans one billion times, or losing Domination games over and over when trying to level up the last few times. My final thought, is basically what is one of the last things Chara says,"Let's erase this pointless world and move on to the next." It's not saying this because it actually has a desire to end the world. It's saying this because it can't get any stronger in this world, and since strength is all it lives on, it needs another world to go through. Chara is basically gaining a prestige in Call of Duty terms. It wants to reset at level 1 and get all the way back up. It's the exact same, in almost every way, as a player of Call of Duty trying to reach prestige 10. The only difference is in Undertale you feel bad about it because these are all characters you know and probably love. Chara just doesn't feel those things. It just doesn't look at those monsters as anything more than things to be killed. I also think it probably doesn't look at other humans as anything more than things to be killed. Chara in Undertale, isn't another character in the story of Undertale. Instead it's just like the idea of gamers who only care about gameplay, and are completely detached from what the game is actually about. Just from a different lens. And from that perspective, perhaps the question may not be so much Pacifist vs Genocide, or even Frisk vs Chara as much as it is a battle of experiencing games or only playing games.
Tl;dr
Chara in Undertale is the same thing as a gamer trying to get to max level in a game like Call of Duty. Just a player who doesn't care about anything else but getting stronger. Now then, I could rant on why I disagree with Toby Fox on this question, but this was his game, and I wouldn't have even wrote this somewhat objective analysis if I didn't find it interesting. So anyways, good job Undertale, I still think you're amazing, and you get fourth for my 2015 game of the year, which for 2015, is really good.
