Before I could question on what I had just seen , we heard rapid footsteps down the corridor. "Quick! Into the vents," Elaina hissed. She swiftly tore off a vent door on the bottom of the walls door, and she ducked under. I awkwardly squeezed inside, then Alex was after me. I used to be able to jump into the vents in only a few seconds notice when I hid from my family, I guess I went through a growth spurt. Alex swallowed,"Okay to make it easier on ourselves, whoever's voice we hear first is the one we kill." His comment was hair-raising, but I believed we had no other choice.

"Shut up! I hear someone!" El's voice stayed sharp as we stayed still, all of us squished together in uncomfortable positions. We all strained our ears to hear to source of the footsteps rushing toward the room. However, the steps left as soon as they had came, racing down the corridor.

"False alarm, someone was probably practicing a sport or something." I quietly said.

"Okay, let's get this over with." Alex sounded brave, but I could see his shoulders slightly shaking. El gave us a swift nod and began to crawl down a random direction. We moved slowly and gently, careful not to make a sound and make the vent break. Please don't let us fall into the middle of the archery arena, I prayed.

We had been crawling and swiping spider webs off of our faces when we heard a faint voice. Our ears perked up and we stopped moving, trying to make out words.

"No, I ordered a new set... Yes, the French collection... They said the perfume set would be delivered last week!..."

The voice was familiar, and I struggled to match the voice to a name.

"It's.. It's.." I furrowed my eyebrows.

"Mom." El's bent neck raised, and her eyes slightly widened. She stared at the vent wall, listening to the voice of our Mom. She probably hadn't heard that voice in so long, with the exception of a dream or two (I'm guessing). I wondered how she recognized the voice so quickly, but that wasn't the important part. My mother's voice was the first we heard, that meant..

We would kill her.

"H-how do we get to her room?" Alex whispered.

I wasn't sure, it's not like I used the vent to get to my parents, I used it so they couldn't get to me.

"This way," El said in a hushed tone. She nodded her head toward the left pipe, crawling down it.

"How do you know?" I asked, keeping my voice low. She shrugged and mumbled something about following the sound of the voice. I was confused, because the voice was so low we weren't able to make out more then 15 words.
