The pace of my breath increased as the low growl pierced through the silent air. I felt Jon subconsciously move closer to me. I scanned the forest floor and the leaf covered trees, trying to see what was making the eerie sound. I heard the sound again, this time, it sounded closer, and more off to the right. We both whipped our hands toward that direction, our ears straining to hear the noise.
Jon shakily stood and I scrambled to my feet.
"El?" Jon called out, but it came out as a soft whisper. If El was hiding, she certainly did NOT want to be found. Suddenly, a sound of fast paced footprints scurried across the floor, and a shadow darting across the far end of the clearing caught my eye.
"What, what was that?" I asked.
Jon didn't say anything but responded with a simple shrug.
"Let's head back,," Jon said, and we began to backtrack.
I led us to a frustrated El, whose hands were busy punching a tree.
"El, calm down!" I yelled.
"There,"-punch-"are,"-punch-"no,"-punch-"STUPID ANIMALS IN THIS WHOLE PLACE."
She smacked the tree one last time, before turning to us, her face a brilliant shade of red.
Suddenly, the growl was back, and we heard footsteps rushing in our direction.
Fast.
Then, after a moment of silence, a large, black blur leaped out of the trees and straight at Jon.
