I leaned my back against the tree, my vision blurring from the tears welling up in my eyes. I hated that we had to "impress" Fredrick. I was never good at fitting the mold of perfection and sure have never impressed anyone. Going to all my brother's and sister's competitions and recitals and concerts just gave me a daily reminder that I wasn't good enough. And to go to the extent to kill something to impress someone I despised, I wasn't up for that. My eyes focused on the tree that I put my weight against. The bark was a glorious mixture of browns and reds, and the feeling on my fingertips felt so soothing and calm. Just like animals, why would someone want to just cut it down for their selfish pleasure? The sounds of heavy breaths and leaves crunching brought my attention back to reality. I looked up to see Alex running up to me, brushing his soft hair out of his eyes. I quickly wiped my tears on my shirt, hoping not to draw attention to it. He caught his breath, leaning against the tree next to mine.
"Jon! Why did you run off like that? Do you seriously want to be devoured by an animal?"
I rolled my eyes, "Sure you're scared of being eaten by an animal but killing one doesn't seem to hurt you at all!"
He sighed heavily,"It's not like that! It's-" he began. "Oh what am I kidding this is crazy, what have we gotten ourselves into."
I giggled,"Damn this gene."
"Correct! Damn this gene!"
I turned to him,"How are we even going to do this? Fredrick is a psycho, not to mention how we get to Maya and destroy all of this."
He smiled and shrugged,"Who knows, we just have to work with whatever is thrown at us."
We both chuckled, then our chuckles were drained out by the sound of a faint growl.
I crawled over to him whispering,"How do we work with this?"
