Chapter 9: Reliving the Past
Melody's POV:
...
How did he figure it out? How did he know about Russ? I never once mentioned my little brother. I stood there looking at him with pure shock and confusion on my face.
"How did.. How did you know?" I stutter.
"I saw a dark haired boy in the picture on the mantle. I guess I never connected the dots until now."
This can't be happening. I didn't want to talk about Russ. It's too painful, and quite frankily it's none of his business.
"Well I had little brother named Russ, that's all there is to that story."
"Had? What aren't you telling me?"
"It's none of your business Travis."
"To hell it isn't Melody. I'm in love with you. I want to know everything about you past, present, and future. How am I supposed to gain your trust when you won't let me in?"
"You don't understand." I start to cry and I can't help but break. I don't even care that he sees me cry, or when he comes and picks me up and takes me home. He places me in my bed and crawls in too. He just lays there holding me while I finally mourn the loss of my brother. I never cried before, I had to stay strong for my family. I kept all of my feelings bottled up, and now I can feel a weight lifting off me. I finally stop crying.
Travis caresses my hair while we lay there in silence.
"He was fifteen," I whisper.
"I'm so sorry baby."
"It was all my fault."
"No it wasn't."
"You don't even know what happened."
"I don't have to know, because I'm certain it was an accident."
"It was his first party Travis. He was so excited. He went with his friend Dylan. Apparently that night he had his first kiss. Dylan said he was so excited, he was going to ask the girl to homecoming. He never got the chance to though. That night at the party Dylan had been drinking. He was the one driving Russ home, little bastard. They left the party, but Russ never made it home. They ran into a light pole and it was on Russ' side. He died instantly, but did Dylan die? Of course not! It was my sweet baby brother."
"I'm so sorry baby, but it's not your fault."
"Mom and Dad were out of town! I shouldn't have let him go! I told him no alchol under any circumstances, because he had been caught multiple times drunk late at night near the school football field. He hadn't had a drop in weeks. I was so proud of him, so I decided to let him go to the party. I should've called to check on him. I would've known he was drunk and then I could've driven him home! IT WAS ALL MY FAULT."
"No it's not your fault, you were trying to do something nice for your brother, you couldn't have possibly known that things would turn out that way."
"Oh Travis..." I cried into his shirt, and it felt good to have him to lean on. All of the previous anger I had was gone.
I was with him the entire time except for two hours between the period of his promise to not drink. When I kissed him he didn't taste like alcohol, and I believed him. He hadn't broken his promise.
.....
Travis' POV:
I felt like the biggest jackass in the world while I held Melody in my arms. Her little brother had died because of his drinking problem. Here I was with a drinking problem. Melody shouldn't have to go through this again.. No she wouldn't go through this again. I would never jeopardize their relationship again.
"What happened to Dylan?"
"He was paralyzed from the waist down. He's in jail for five more years."
"How long ago did this happen?"
"About 15 months."
"I'm so sorry sweetheart."
.....
Melody's POV:
I didn't care that we had just made up, or that I was mourning over my brother in front of him. I was just glad he was here next to me. I need him, just like he needs me.
"Travis.." I looked up and his eyes were closed, but I knew he was still awake.
"Mmm.."
"How are we going to make this work?" His eyes shot open.
"We're gonna take it one day at a time; and I'm going to stop drinking."
" Okay." I try and manage a small smile.
"Travis?"
"Yeah?"
"I really want you to kiss me right now." A grin breaks across his face as he places his lips against mine.
At first the kiss is slow and gentle. Almost teasing in a way. Then our tongues connect and he pulls me closer to him. It starts to get really heated I find him on top of me and all I want is to be closer to him. I wrap my legs around his waist and I can feel him smirk. He starts leaving a trail of kisses down my neck and onto my chest. I let out a moan.
"Travis I need you."
"I need you too babe."
And just like that we became one.
