Chapter 6: Not So Perfect After All?

3 months later...

Everything in my life is perfect. I love my job and I have my first serious boyfriend who I  am madly in love with. What could be better? Life was just great.

Travis had seemed a little distant lately. I assumed it was just all of the stress from his job. He wasn't getting much business because no one in our small town really had the need for a lawyer. So all in all money was tight. He had been taking online courses for agriculture but it was winter and he couldn't get the farm up and running with the weather conditions.

I was driving home from work and the snow was coming down heavy. I couldn't think of a better  reason to stop and get a nice steaming cup of coffee.

I parked in front of Millie's Cafe and ran inside quickly. I ordered my usual Vanilla Latte topped with whipped cream and cinnamon. It was pure heaven. I sat down at the seat next to the window sipping my drink. Then I saw him.

A smile spread across my face every time I saw him. He was standing outside the local bar, which was an unusual place for Travis to be. So I decided I would walk across the street and ask if he wanted to grab dinner real quick

...

"Hey baby," I smiled at him and stood up on my tippy toes expecting a kiss in return.

"What are you doing here?" His eyes were hard and emotionless, I then realized that he reaked of alcohol.

"Travis, have you been drinking?"

"Yeah, It's not against the law I am 22 years old. Who are you my mother?" I stood there shell shocked. Travis never spoke to me like this.

"You didn't mean that you're drunk."

"Oh but I meant every word sweetheart. You're always bossing me around, expecting me to be perfect. We don't have to spend every waking minute together, Jesus."

I could feel the tears starting to well up in my eyes, but blinked rapidly to ensure he wouldn't see them actually fall.

" I never pegged you to be an alcoholic. I guess I missed all  the signs. I also thought you liked spending time with me, but I guess that was another thing I got wrong. I knew this whole love story was too good to be true. I guess I will see you around, take care of yourself Travis." I saw his eyes soften, but I didn't stay around to see what he would say next. With that I stalked over to my truck and drove away, not even bothering to look in the mirror.

......

On the way home I replayed the events of what had just happened. Travis had never spoken to me like that. I hadn't even realized his drinking problem before. But now that I think about it he always had beer stocked in his fridge, whenever we ate out he would have at least three drinks. He often had me pick him up from the bar, or drop him off. I had figured he was just meeting friends there.

But most of all I was thinking about where we stood. Had I ended our relationship? Were we broken up? Were we still together? Had that just been a stupid fight?

We had never fought before and I honestly didn't know how to pull myself together.

When I got home I was glad to realize that my parents had gone away for the weekend. They had done that a lot more now that I had Travis to keep me company. The only thing I could think to do was call my older sister Cameron.

"Hey Cam, It's me."

"Hey baby sis, What's up?"

"I.. I.. Oh Cam.." The tears finally started spilling out.

"I will be there in fifteen minutes."  And with that she hung up.

Just like she had promised she arrived fifteen minutes later. When she saw me she practically ran over to the couch.

"What's wrong? What did he do?" Her voice was full of worry.

"He.. We.. I.." I just burst into more tears. I couldn't help it.

"Shh.. Everything's gonna work out." She pulled me in for a hug it lasted for I don't even know how long. Finally I was able to explain the entire situation to her. She just listened carefully and gave the occasional nod. When I finished she sat there trying to think of what to say.

"You love him, don't you?"

"Of course.. but.." I sighed looking to her for help.

"I think you need to let things cool down. He sounds like he needs help, but I just don't want you to get hurt if he's been drinking. Wait it out for a couple of days. He will come to his senses I'm sure of it. I don't see anything that is worth ruining a relationship over."

"Thanks Cam... Do you think you could stay with me tonight?" A grin spread across her face.

"I was already planning on it! So I was thinking girls night in? I brought The Notebook, When in Rome, and Legally Blonde!"

"You know me too well! I will go get the food while you get the movie started!"

I ran into the kitchen and grabbed all the junk food I could find. Popcorn, Pizza, Chips, Cola, Sour Gummy Worms, Hershey bars, Ice Cream.. You name it we ate it.

We laughed and  cried the entire night with our favorite chick flicks. We fell asleep in the middle of legally blonde, both sprawled across the couch.

.....

The next morning I woke to a pounding at the door. I looked over to Cam who was still sound asleep. I didn't know what to do so I went upstairs and pulled the shot gun out of dad's closet.

I looked through the peep hole only to find Travis on the other side of the door.

"OPEN THE GOD DAMN DOOR MEL! I KNOW YOUR IN THERE!"

I didn't respond though, I just slid down to the ground and burst into tears. I wasn't ready to see him. I needed time to cool off and think. I think he did too. That's when I noticed Cam had woken up in the midst of all the chaos. She came over to where I sat by the door.

"I know you're not ready, Don't worry I will take care of it." She then opened the door to a very angry Travis.

"Who the hell  are you?"

"I'm her sister jackass. I suggest you leave before you make things worse."

" I need to talk to her though. I screwed up I... I didn't mean to. I was drunk. Just let me see her."

"She doesn't want to see you right now." My sister's tone was so harsh, I wasn't even sure if it was her speaking.

"MELODY, BABY, I'M SORRY. CAN YOU PLEASE JUST COME OUT SO WE CAN TALK?" He shouted through the door. I think he expected I was at the top of the stairs and I couldn't hear him. My sister then just slammed the door in his face and locked it behind her. I stood there shocked at what had just happened.  My sister drug me to the couch and we started Legally Blonde over from the beginning.

Two hours later I looked through the window surprised to see Travis sitting on the porch with his head between his knees and his hands covering the back of his neck.
