Chapter 35: Our Dinner Guest
Melody's POV:
The day before Christmas Eve...
We had just gotten back from the grocery store. Mom always waits until the last minute to buy food, considering Christmas Eve is tomorrow.
For some reason she decided to do the gourmet meal tonight, and she wouldn'y let me help at all.
I even was supposed to dress night.
This woman irritates the living daylight out of me, she's probably having the pastor over for dinner. I go up to my old room and start getting ready. I look through my suitcase and look for something halfway decent to wear.
I decide on a loose white blouse and I tuck it into my high waisted dark blue denim skinny jeans and I top the look off with brown riding boots and loosely curled hair with minimal makeup. I decide to spritz on some perfume.
I do a once over in the mirror and then make my way back downstairs and into the kitchen.
"Hey mom."
She looks up from her cooking and I get the criticizing eye. She sighs and puts her spoon down.
"Are you sure you don't want to change into something a little bit nicer, a very important dinner guest is coming over tonight."
"Mom, relax; this is as good as it's going to get, if you'd rather I can go upstairs and slip back into the sweatpants and hoodie I had on earlier."
"No no, you look lovely dear," She replies.
"Thanks mom that sounded very sincere," I say.
"Will you at least put some lipstick on or something?" She pleads.
"Fine," I grumble.
I stomp back upstairs and put a tiny amount of red lipstick on; compliments of my mother. I'm on my way back downstairs when I hear the doorbell.
"I'll get it!" I yell.
I hurry down the stairs and open up the door.
"Hi, come on..." I trail off when I look up to see two very familiar blue eyes looking into mine.
I don't say anything else, I leave the door wide open and then storm in to the kitchen.
"What the hell?!?!" I yell at my mother.
She turns around and points her finger at me in the midst of her glare.
"Do not use that kind of language in my house!"
"Mother! What are you doing?" I scream.
"I'm trying to help you get your life back in order!"
"My life is fine! Why do you insist on screwing around with it?!"
"You are not fine Melody! Look at you, usually you would be out exploring the land and trying new things while there's a break in your busy life! instead you sit around all day in sweatpants watching stupid movies or doing work! You didn't just lose Travis the day his brother died, you lost yourself!" She yells trying to talk sense into me.
"Mom, thanks for your opinion but I don't want it," I whisper, trying to keep my composure. Which of course fails as a single tear rolls down my cheek.
My mom steps closer to me and wipes the tear away as she cups my head in her hands looking me in the eyes.
"Honey, I love you and I want whats best for you. I know you're fine; but I can tell you aren't okay. I think it's time to give him another chance." She gently whispers while she hugs me.
