Joel's POV

At first everything was confusing. I didn't know who I was or where I was at. I was lost and didn't know a thing about life. Little by little I began to have weird flashbacks and random dreams about things that seemed too real.

There were nights where I would dream the same thing over and over. In those dreams, it was a face. A girl. She would look at me like I was the sun, and in those same dreams I would think of her as the stars that decorated the sky at night.

A very long time passed and her face haunted me in my thoughts. I didn't know her name or anything about her, but I knew that I loved her more than myself. Mariana. Her name came to me one night during a street fight.

I ended up in California where I picked up my smoking habit. It's been years, but I still don't know much about life or myself. But I seem to know everything about her. I've moved around a lot, hoping for a better life, but it's never worked.

Now I'm in a small city called Durham where everything looks too familiar. I decided to take a walk and somehow ended up in a park. I sat beside a young girl, I didn't get to see her face, but she seemed young.
After a while of just sitting around looking off into space a small kid came up to the stranger. He looked at me for a little bit, his eyes reminded me of my own. He and the young lady were having a quiet discussion, but then she gasped and looked up at me.

"Joel?" She asked in shock.

"Do I know- Mari?" I knew her! It was the same person haunting me every time I closed my eyes. The same one who kept me up all night writing random poems and love songs.

"No no no no." She repeated over and over. "No! Why now?" She asked to herself.

"I'm sorry what?" I dumbly asked her.

"You're dead! I went to your funeral! You're dead!" And with that she grabbed the small boy and ran away.

I was not going to let her run away. I chased after her until I finally caught up to her.

"Please explain to me." I silently begged her.

She looked at me with those eyes that could tear you down and put you back together again. She had doubt written all over her face and she somehow looked scared. The little boy in her arms whispered something to her and she looked back at me.

"Get in the car." Was all she said and I obeyed.
