Chapter 26
The next morning I woke up to find Fire was gone. Really? I yawned, stretching my hands to the ceiling. Then I took a quick shower. After that I just dressed in a pair of lounging sweats and my favorite basketball tee. After lounging around and watching TV for a while, I decided I was starving. So I took off my mask and made my way to the grocery store.
I didn't feel like eating meat. So I grabbed some apples and some bread. Then I grabbed some sour watermelon. I love them. I waited in line for about five minutes. I was getting impatient. I huffed and gave the annoying person in front of me a mental push. Only, it wasn't mental. The man fell over. I put my hand to my face to stop from laughing. "Are you alright, sir?" I glanced at the cashier. It was Josh. From school. "Joshie?"
He glanced at me and scowled. "Don't call me that, Mary." I shrugged, "Don't call me Mary and we have a deal." He stared at me for a second, only turning his gaze away to give the man his receipt. "Okay," he said. "Deal." I smirked in triumph. "By the way, I think you shouldn't have been expelled. Mrs. Maddy should've gotten fired for that," he said. This time, I just stared at him in surprise. He ducked his head, "I mean, she shouldn't have slapped anyone. Even if it was you."
I smiled, "Thanks." He smiled, ringing me up. "Your total is nine-oh-seven." I handed him the money and thanked him. "See you around, Selena," he said after me. "And, don't worry, we'll find a way to get you back in school." I turned around, "Who?" He smiled, "Me, Dustin, Kasper, Marvel, and Kristina. There are some people in the school who don't hate you, Selena." I smiled, "Thanks. Well, I have to get back. You know how Moms are when you don't get back soon. They think you get raped." I laughed, waving behind me.
As soon as I was out of sight, I flew up into the sky and slipped my mask back on. I was really starving, so I started to eat my apple. I stopped flying to see a few people harassing a little girl on the street. It took everything I had not to go down there and knock them all out. As it was, I gritted my teeth and blew hard, making them fall back. I made my voice low and scary, "Get away from the girl and never come back!" Then scrambled away as fast as they could. As much as I wanted to, I couldn't give up my superhero status. It's just comedy relief if I go destroy something.
I flew down to the little girl and she cowered against the wall. "I'm not here to hurt you," I said slowly. "I just want to make sure they didn't hurt you." She looked up. "What's your name?" I asked softly. "Azalea." I smiled. "Are you alright, Azalea?" I asked. She nodded, "Thank you, Mrs. Night." I winced. "Just.." Jamie or Marcie? Marcie. "Marcie," I finished. She smiled. "Now you better get back to your Mom before she starts to worry." Little Azalea ran back to her Mom with one last wave in my direction. And I couldn't help but think, Man, I really miss that.
