Chapter Twenty-Six

Esmeralda couldn’t get out of her head that her blood didn’t cure Brad. It always worked and after all she knew her boyfriend was a human.  Brad didn’t seem to care much about the whole incident. The only thing that mattered to him was that Mimi was dead.  He was the happiest man on Earth with Esmeralda on his side.  Brad loved her more than any other woman he had laughed before.  Cora was still watching him sometimes and she was happy, if she still had a body she would cry in happiness. Her beloved one was save and happy.   She would soon be able to rest in peace and be reborn.

Esmeralda decided to leave the house as Brad was sound asleep.  She had her midnight snack from the fridge, a blood bag.  Then she vamped out running towards Mara’s house. Unsurprisingly the witch seemed to be already awaiting her.  Esmeralda wanted to open her mouth and explain why she came so late.

“I know why you are here.”-Mara answered without looking at the vampire.

“Oh really, I’m not here to tell you that your granddaughter is dead.”-Esmeralda answered.

“I know you didn’t kill her. It was him.”-Mara answered dry, heading back into her house and the vampire followed her.

“You mean Brad, yes.”-Esmeralda answered in a nervous tone.

“And he is the reason why you are here, right?”-Mara stated uninterested.  She went her kitchen and took out a few herbs; she placed them in a bowl and burned them as she got back to her guest. The witch muttered: Nihil relinquere locum istum, ut occultum maneat in nobis. Esmeralda looked at her questioningly.

“Now it’s save to talk, no one can hear us and even you won’t be able to speak of this with anyone else.”-Mara answered satisfied.  Mara then continued by telling Esmeralda about Brad’s father.  He is thought dead but never died; he just left without a trace.  Like all of his kind do when they lived in a place for too long, that is the rule of the fallen ones.  Joe Spears always claimed to his kind that Brad was not his biological son.  The child was the result of artificial insemination as his wife longed for a kid. As Joe was infertile, that usually is the case of his kind.  Brad is a miracle, half human and half angel. He might be the first hybrid of this kind but there could be more out there.  Brad being half celestial is why he can’t be cured with vampire blood. It does nothing to him. If a werewolf bites him he dies, because he can’t turn like normal humans. On the other hand he is half human and thus can be compelled and bewitched.  It’s uncertain for how long he will live as he is half immortal. It’s unsure if he poses a threat to the supernatural world but they certainly don’t like it and he could be in danger.  Thus it’s very important to keep the secret about his true nature.  The talisman that Mara gave Brad protects him against magic and compulsion but not against death.

The herbs in the bowl have now burned down and Mara made notion to Esmeralda that she could leave.  Esmeralda obeyed and didn’t know how to deal with it. She never met any fallen one or at least not since she became a vampire.  Maybe that was part one of one of their rules too. Let live or kill. So they stayed away from vampires. Nathaniel used to speak of them and curse them.  Mara cast a secrecy spell which meant that Esmeralda knew Brad’s nature but couldn’t tell anyone. Not even when a fallen one or another vampire would get into her head.  As Esmeralda slowly walked home, she sensed the wind blow and Viktor appeared.

“So found out your boyfriend’s secret?”-Viktor asked in a mocking tone.

“What?”-Esmeralda asked back confused.

“Oh you can’t talk about it. That was expected. You could have asked me.”-Viktor stated.

“You wouldn’t have told me, would you?”-Esmeralda asked almost sure of the answer.
