Chapter 5

The next day Carlisle and I returned home with Jake. To my relief Edward was at Kindergarden and all the others had preoccupied themselves. Everyone that is apart from Alice.

“Bella!” She danced over to me as soon as we got in the front door, “We’re going shopping!”

“Alice, I’m really not-” I stopped and sighed when she gave me a look as if to say We’re going.

“Okay.” I gave in, “Just let me wash and change.”

“Yay!” She danced up the stairs ahead of me.

I was trying on a top that Alice had picked out for me when the most amazing scent filled my nose. It was sweet but not too sweet and had a hint of strawberries and roses. I could hear the steady beat of the human it came from and fought to stay in the cubicle. When the person had shut themselves in the cubicle three along from me I stripped off the top I had been trying on and pulled back on my old one. Alice stood outside my cubicle having seen my future, “I’m sorry Bella.” She whispered too quickly and quietly for any human to comprehend.

“It’s okay Alice.” I held my breath as the two of us quickly walked out of the store and headed for home.

“You’re back early?” Jasper stated as we both walked in the door. I was feeling guilty, never before had I wanted to taste a humans blood so much, I hadn’t even seen this persons face, their blood smelled better than Edwards and his was tempting enough.

“Bella got attracted to some blood.” Alice explained as she put down the bags at the bottom of the stairs.

“You walked away though?” Esme asked as she set down her book.

“Only just.” I sighed, “I don’t get it, I’ve never been attracted to blood like that before.”

“Sometimes different scents attract us more than others.” Jasper explained, “It’s a hunting thing. Like how different foods taste nicer to different people.”

“I think I understand.” I frowned.

“You walked away, that’s the main thing.” Esme smiled kindly to me.

“Carlisle is picking up Edward and will be back in fifteen minutes.” Alice told us.

“I’ll make a snack for him.” I stood up as Jake and Ness came in the door laughing.

“Where have you two been?” Rose asked as she and Emmet came down from their room.

“We went for a walk.” Ness shrugged, “Mom, you’re back.” She came over and hugged me.

“Sorry for disappearing.” I smiled.

“It’s okay, I don’t mind.” Ness smiled to me, “We’ve gone to do our homework.”

“Okay.” I turned towards the kitchen and took out some bread and jam for Edward.

“Bella!” Edward exclaimed as he came in the door with Carlisle, “Where’d you go?”

“I went to see a friend of mine.” I lied easily to him, perhaps too easily.

“I missed you.” He hugged my leg.

“Yeah well I made you some jam sandwiches so you can go and watch tv while you eat them.” I shooed him towards the tv as Carlisle came over, “Feeling okay?”

“Better than I did.” I smiled to him, “I’ll just have to learn to cope.”

“It’ll get easier.” Carlisle nodded, “Perhaps when he’s a little older we can explain to him what happened.”
