Chapter 31

Jake

Carlisle drove us to Forks in his Mercedes, I sat in the passenger seat watching out of the window as he drove. We couldn’t get there quick enough, despite Rosalie’s modifications to the car so it went faster. I was so relieved that Edward had let Nessie come with me, I don’t know how I would cope without her — simply having her near me was comfort in itself. I had been expecting Edward to refuse to let her come, after all, she was still his little girl.

I looked across to Carlisle, “Did you expect Edward to let Ness come?”

Carlisle sighed and shrugged, picking his words carefully, “He knows what it’s like to have parents in hospital that you can do nothing for,” His eyes narrowed a little, “He had nobody there to support him, I don’t doubt that he wished he did.”

I nodded in understanding, “But still, she’s his little girl, isn’t she?”

Carlisle nodded, “Of course, she always will be to him. He knows that he can’t smother her forever. I think it was all made much smoother by the fact he saw the pair of you from a different point of view rather than as a father.”

I smiled briefly, “I’m glad.”

We went straight to the hospital, arriving in the early hours of the morning. Carlisle lead the way in to reception, in my daze I only then realised that he looked older, much older.

The receptionist looked up and gasped, “Dr Cullen!?”

Carlisle smiled to her, “Hi Mel, listen, I believe you’ve got a very close family friend in, Billy Black?”

Mel nodded and looked past him to Ness and I, I vaguely heard Carlisle explain what he could to her before we were lead to a private room. Everywhere smelt of bleach and I didn’t like it, it was too strong and heavy in the air. Ness squeezed my hand lightly as we walked in to the room, “It’s okay,”

I forced a smile to her and nodded as I walked over to my dad, he looked so peaceful in his sleep. There was no denying it though, he looked sick. His skin was pale, heart weak and bones showing. I couldn’t disturb him. Carlisle stood outside talking to another doctor quietly. Ness’ smooth thumb stroked over the back of my hand, silently comforting me.

I pulled her in to my arms and held her tightly, I could smell her shampoo, something herbal and sweet. I bit the inside of my lip to prevent a sob from escaping, “I’m not ready to let him go yet Ness,”

She pulled back from me and frowned, “You don’t have to, he’s strong, he’ll be alright.”

She swayed us side to side a little, as I cried in to her hair.

I ended up in the chair by my dads bed, Ness had gone to talk to Carlisle a few minutes ago while I watched him sleep. I looked around when the door opened and she came over to me, touching my shoulder lightly, “Carlisle and I are going back to the house, are you staying here?”

I nodded, “I want to be here when he wakes up, so he knows I’m here.”

Ness kissed my hair, “Call me if you need me, and try to get some sleep.”

I nodded and squeezed her hand, “Thanks sweet, I love you.”

“I love you too, Jake.”

I drifted off shortly after she left, only waking up when a nurse touched my arm lightly, her hand cool against my warm skin, “Hmm?” I rubbed my eyes and sat up.
