Chapter 23
Bella
Jake, Ness and, I spent the three weeks after christmas in Forks to visit Charlie, Sue, and the wolves. We decided to spend Jake’s birthday in La Push with the other wolves and Jake’s family. Later in the day I took a walk with Charlie while Ness and Jake went out with the other kids.
“So,” Charlie dug his hands deeper in to his pockets, “What’s up with you and Edward? I’ve not heard you talk about him for a while.”
I shook my head and sighed, I’d known he’d bring it up sooner or later and had been trying to figure out what to tell him, “Things are complicated at the moment,” I eventually replied, looking up to the thin canopy of branches that covered us, “He isn’t himself and I can’t talk to him like I usually would,”
Charlie frowned and looked ahead, he couldn’t see the fine mist that hung in the air, it was too fine for him, “Not himself? In what way?”
I shrugged again, “It’s a need to know thing,” I glanced across to him, “But I can tell you it’s a bit like amnesia.”
“Can’t Carlisle do something?”
I shook my head sadly, “He says all we can do is let time fix it, one day he’ll just go back to normal.”
“Gee,” Charlie huffed, “Wish there was something I could do for you kid,” He patted my shoulder, “I’m here you know … if you ever need a shoulder to cry on.”
I laughed softly at his offer, Charlie was a great dad, but not the best when it came to giving comfort. He smiled when I laughed, pleased that he had cheered me up a little.
“Thanks dad,” I nodded as we turned back to the house.
As we neared the house I heard Ness crying in my bedroom, Charlie must've heard her too and nodded to me, “I’ll go and find Jake,”
"Thanks dad,” I smiled to him and ran upstairs at a human pace.
I knocked lightly on the door, “Ness, it’s me, can I come in?”
She sniffed and mumbled, “Yeah,” To me and I opened the door quietly. I moved over and sat on the bed with her, pulling her gently so her head rested in my lap.
“What’s wrong?” I stroked her hair back.
Ness wiped her damp eyes and sighed, “I’m a failure,”
I frowned, “What makes you think that?” I leant my head to the side as I watched her.
“We were all taking today, about where we wanted to be in ten years …” She sobbed again and hid her face, I took her hand and she showed me the scene. Everyone was sat around a bonfire at the beach, Ness was next to Jake but not touching him, most of the others were sat with their imprints in their lap.
“Where do you think you’ll be in five years?” Rachel asked her brother from where she leant against Paul. Jake gave a slight glance to Ness before shrugging, “Same place a
I’ve always been.” He smiled at his sister, “What about you?”
Rachel laughed and looked lovingly at Paul, “Happily married, kid on the way?”
Paul laughed and nodded in agreement while Jake moaned, “Enough PDA’s! She is my sister!”
Ness bit her lip and looked to the floor, thinking to herself, Why can everyone else have their wishes?
