Carlisle

Chapter 13

I arrived home before Esme, the wind was getting up and I could feel a tension in the air. As soon as I went inside and slammed the door harder than necessary I think everyone knew something was up.

“Were’s Esme?” Ness asked tentatively as I passed her and Jake in the lounge.

“Bringing the car.” I snapped.

I didn’t miss the look hey shared as I headed up to my office.

“She has no right,” I muttered as I paced back and forth, “How could she even accuse me of such a thing?” I shook my head, “She thinks I’m cheating on her!”

I sat down and took out a book to read but couldn’t focus on it entirely. My thoughts kept drifting to Esme’s accusations. Eventually Ness knocked on the door.

“Come in, Ness.” I called as I set the book down.

“Are you okay?” She asked as she took a seat facing me.

“Me and your grandma have just had a bit of an argument,” I explained, “It’ll blow over when she gets back.”

“If you’re sure,” Ness sighed and came to hug me.

“Promise.” I smiled as she went.

Two hours later I heard my car pull up and the door slam as Esme walked to the door, muttering under her breath about me being immature. I went back to my book and continued reading. I heard Esme come upstairs and go to our bedroom, it had been over 24 hours since we had spoken and I had a feeling it would be a while before either of us broke the silence. I looked up as the wind rattled the windows and thunder rumbled not so far away, reflecting the tension and mood in the house.

Esme was right, I stood up and watched out of the window as Jake played catch with Ness, I was being immature, running off from her. I ought to apologise.

I was about to go to our room when a small tree flew past the window, I ran downstairs and in to the lounge where everyone had gathered.

“It’s a hurricane!” Emmet yelled, “In the basement.”

“No,” I disagreed, “Outside, run about half a mile north, to the cliff face.”

We all took off at a run, me leading the way with Edward on my back, Bella had Ness with her but the rest I didn’t really register.

I looked around as the others entered the cave I had once spotted on a hunt, but we were one person down.

“Esme,” I whispered and turned to run back to the house, towards the hurricane.

“Carlisle!” Emmet yelled as he followed me, “Wait!”

We heard a crash up ahead, a faint hissing, and then the crackle of electricity. I ran faster, needing to beat the explosion I knew, and had feared, was coming. I suddenly hated myself even more, what if the worst happened and the last thing I had said to Esme was …

Then there was the explosion.

“Esme!” I yelled, it was the main house, she had been in our room. I had been stupid enough to assume that she’d follow us when we decided to leave. The ground floor was on fire, it was most intense in the kitchen, right below our room. I was about to bolt in to the fire when I was tackled to the ground.
