Chapter 24

Carlisle

Things passed quietly after Christmas, Bella returned from Forks with Jake and Ness who had begun dating. Their love for each other was as obvious as any of the other couples in the house and it continued to blossom every day.

We, as a family, had agreed to take a break from gift giving for birthdays and anniversaries this year. It was useful to have such a year every now and again as we all had everything we could possibly want.

So yes, for the first time in a few years, twelve months passed relatively quietly and normally. With the exception, of course, of Edward being human. Just because the year was quiet didn’t mean it was simple. There was the occasional disagreement or word said by Edward that would trigger some sort of event but these usually passed without much fuss and things would continue the same as ever.

I came in from my hospital shift on New Years Eve and Esme came straight to my arms, she sighed with a smile and rested her head on my shoulder, “Two weeks tomorrow,” She murmured.

I smiled in return, “It’ll be good to have him back,” I sniffed the air, there was nobody else home.

Esme pulled me towards the stairs, “Edward, Ness, and Jake went to a party. Alice and Bella are spying on them, the rest went hunting.”

I grinned and lifted her in to my arms, “Are you implying we should take this upstairs Mrs Cullen?”

She leant in to kiss me, “Most definitely.”

Nessie

I laughed as Jake pulled me away from the pumping music and out in to the cold night air.

“Jake, where are we going?” I asked as I stumbled in my heels.

He smirked and lifted me in to his arms, I snuggled close to his warm body and wrapped my arms around his neck.

“It’s not far,” He promised and continued to walk.

I looked up at the cloudless sky as he carried me to the centre of the park. I could hear the ripple of the water fountain in the lake and the smell of the now closed chestnut stand lingered in the air.

I looked down to Jake, “What are we doing here?”

He set me down on my feet and reached in to his jacket pocket. There must’ve been speakers hidden in the trees or something as piano music began to play as Jake lifted my arms around his neck and rested his hands on my hips. I soon recognised the song as my lullaby that dad had composed for me when I was a baby. Tears welled in my eyes and I rested my head against Jake’s chest, I felt the vibration of his chest as he talked, “Just another two weeks and he’ll be back Ness,” He pressed his lips to my hair, “And I’m going to show him just how much I would do to make you happy!”

I smiled and looked up to kiss him, “Thank you.”

We swayed until the end of the song and then Jake pulled back to look at his watch, “Come on.” I followed him up the hill to the light of one of the old-fashioned street lamps where a blanket was laid with a wicker picnic basket.

Jake pulled me on to the blanket and produced two champagne flutes. I frowned at him as he skilfully held them in one hand while he took out a bottle of champagne.

“Seriously?” I laughed.

He nodded and assured me, “I checked with your mom that she didn’t mind.”
