Chapter 33- Carlisle

Chapter 33

Carlisle

After the occurrence with the Nomad, we agreed to stay in Forks until the weekend, when we would have the meeting with the wolf pack. Billy was well on the mend and would be released from hospital within another week. 

On the evening of the bonfire I sat in my office, completing applications for a new job in Columbus. I heard Esme walk across the landing, hesitating outside the door. I looked up and smiled as she knocked lightly on the door.

“Come in, love.”

I pulled her in to my lap and leant back in the seat, she smiled and looked down to the papers in front of us, “Is it the same hospital?”

I chuckled softly and nodded, “I’m applying specifically for the children's ward,”

Esme laughed and leant down to kiss me, slow, sweet, and lingering. We were both looking forward to returning to her hometown that we hadn’t been to in such a long time, since she had broken her leg in fact.

I pulled back and whispered quietly, “How’s Alice?”

Esme smiled, “She’s a little more herself now I’ve asked her to design the wardrobes at the new cottages.”

“That’s a relief,” I nodded, Alice had been really shaken by her memories of the asylum. I shuddered at the thought of such a place. Back in the early 1900’s it had been common practice to send people with mental issues to an asylum, they weren’t understood then like they were now. 

Esme stroked my cheek, “What will they have done to her?”

I shook my head, “You don’t want to know,”

She frowned and combed my hair back with her fingers, “It’s bothering you.”

I closed my eyes and pulled her head down to my shoulder, “It doesn’t happen anymore, I’m fine.”

Esme kissed my cheek, “You know you can always talk to me?”

I opened my eyes and smiled when I saw how close her face was to mine, “Yeah.”

“Are you guys coming!?” Alice yelled from downstairs.

I sighed and pulled back from Esme, “We’ll catch you up!”

“Will we now?” Esme leant forward again to kiss me. I chuckled and pulled her tightly to me, laughing when I heard Edward’s groan from downstairs.

“Finally!” Emmet called to us as we joined them on the cliff top with the wolves around the bonfire. Esme laughed and we took the empty space between Edward and Sam. Jake sat with Ness on Sam’s other side, looking out to the rest of the wolves and their imprints.

“Right,” Paul looked to Sam, “We’re all here now, so what have you been keeping so secret for so long?”

Emily smiled happily and rubbed her stomach, “I’m pregnant,”

There were several squeals from the girls and hoots and hollers from the boys. I nodded my congratulations to them as Sam called for quiet. Sam leant forward and sighed, “Because of that, I’m quitting the pack.”

There were several moans of complaint and disappointment, I could understand his reasoning though. If Sam loved Emily as I loved Esme, he wouldn’t want to stand by as she grew older and their child grew up. He’d want to grow old with her.

Jake stood up with a smirk and folded his arms, “Meet your new Alpha boys.”

There were some joking groans and other shouts of excitement, this was why Ness had asked Esme and I if we minded her and Jake using the old house. Of course, we hadn’t minded at all. 

Quil frowned and folded his arms, “But how’s that going to work if you’ve living with Ness?”

Edward quietly sighed but didn’t say anything as Ness smiled, “Don’t worry Quil, he’ll still be living with me.”

Leah looked to Ness and smiled widely, the two had formed a surprising friendship over the years and were often on the phone to each other. Ness nodded to Leah with a smile making her jump up and run around to fire to hug Ness.

Seth looked to his sister, “Explain please?”

“We’re moving in to the old Cullen house,” Jake told them, and looked over to us, “Because you were here so long it’s still easy to follow your scents to several places in Forks. I’ve spoken to Sam and he agrees, but I’d need your permission to extend our area to Forks.”

I looked around to my family, our alliance with the wolves was stronger than it ever had been in the past, they knew our scents and were happy that we didn’t cause a risk to the human population. Our scents will still be lingering around Charlie’s house and our old home, if Jake and Ness were living there, and Sue had moved in with Charlie, then it made sense to make sure they had protection if needed.

I nodded to Jake, “As long as you don’t mind us still coming and going?”

“I think we’ll all have a problem if he says no to that,” Ness laughed.

Sam stood next to Jake, “So, does anybody have any problems or protests against what has been agreed here today?”

Everyone was silent as the fire cracked and hissed. Sam nodded and turned to Jake, holding out his hand to shake, “I, Sam Uley, pass over the Alpha command to you, Jacob Black.”

Jacob took Sam’s hand and shook it once, “And I, Jacob Black, accept.”

The wolves cheered and ran over to Jake, hoisting him up on their shoulders and carrying him around making the rest of us laugh.

Everyone dispersed in to their own conversations after that, Jake and Ness came over to Esme and I, Ness looked a little nervous.

“Ness and I have been thinking,” Jake started when Ness hesitated, “Most of the wolves are still stuck at home with their families, some having the hide the secret.”

“You were wondering if they could move in to the main house?” Esme guessed and then continued without waiting for them to answer, “I think that’s a wonderful idea!”

Ness’ face lit up, “Really!?”

“Yes,” Esme rolled her eyes, “In fact, we could remodel parts of it to make it better suited for them.”

I rolled my eyes as Esme’s enthusiasm and shook my head, “Two houses at once now?” 

Esme shook her head and gave a wave of her hand, “It will be fine, it’s not like I have anything else to do.”

She took Ness’ hand and the two walked off to talk about their ideas, leaving Jake and I both laughing quietly to ourselves.

A/n I would really like some proper feedback other than just things like "I love this story" or "Please update". Whilst these comments are appreciated it doesn't give me any clues in to what YOU would like to see happen, likes and dislikes etc. Especailly as I've moved on from the original plotline now and am poking at some new ideas and options for the various characters. So please go ahead, if you have some plot lines, short or long, that you'd like me to have a go at then leave a comment. If you don't like an aspect that I've written about then please tell me and why you don't like it. Equally if there's something you really like and want more of then tell me! If you don't feed back to me then I don't know what to write and then there won't be updates!
