Esme

Chapter 11

It took Bella the best part of the day to calm down about Edwards new relationship, none of use could understand it, we’d never been there. Poor Bella has had to experience losing her mate twice now, I imagine once was hard enough but to see him loving someone else…

I slowed to a stop as my mobile rang in my pocket, it was Alice, “Alice?” I answered, making Carlisle and Bella turn to see why I had stopped,

“Esme, you need to get to the hospital,” Alice gasped, “It’s Edward,” I looked to Carlisle and Bella as their faces fell,

“Has it happened?” I asked her as we began to run again, “Or was it just a vision?”

“I saw it happening, Emmet went to try and stop it but …” Alice trailed off.

“We will meet you there,” I put the phone back in my pocket and caught up with Carlisle, Bella was slightly ahead.

We took each others hand and shared a glance, praying that he wasn’t too badly hurt.

At the hospital everything was too slow, we couldn’t get to Edward’s room quick enough and the doctor couldn’t explain fast enough what was wrong with him. I stood behind Bella as she sat in the chair and held Edward’s pale hand tightly, I gave her what comfort I could, knowing it was futile trying to tell her everything would be alright.

I turned to the door as Carlisle came in, a tinge of relief on his face.

“What did they say?” I asked him, despite having heard every word he had shared with the Doctor.

“He was in a car crash,” Carlisle stood at the end of the bed and leant on it, “He was driving, they’ve done a head scan and that’s not shown anything up but he did have a bad cut on his leg and a few broken ribs.”

“Then why is he unconscious?” Bella finally looked up,

“There are a lot of main blood vessels in the leg,” Carlisle explained, “The gash caught one of them and he lost a lot of blood,”

“Will he be alright?” I asked, Carlisle gave a single nod, and closed his eyes. I stepped over to him and rested a hand on his back, still with his eyes closed he smiled and straightened himself to wrap his arms around me.

I looked to the boy in the bed, while I loved him the way he was now, I wanted the old Edward back. The Edward that would play the piano all night and help Ness with her school work. Who would play chess with Alice and comfort his wife when she was sad. I wanted the man that saw me as a mother, not the boy who saw us as monsters.

We eventually had to persuade Bella to go home, insisting that it wouldn’t look right if Edward’s sister stayed with him and not his parents. I spent the night in Carlisle’s lap in the armchair, pretending to be asleep but instead exchanging words too quick and quiet for any human to hear.

“A year and ten months,” I murmured, mostly to myself, Carlisle sighed and nodded,

“It’s not going to be as easy as we thought,”

“It was never going to be easy Carlisle,” I told him, “The Volturi are still after us since last time,” I sighed sadly, not wanting to admit the truth but knowing I had to face it, “They want to split us up, no matter what the cost.”

“I won’t let that happen Es,” He held me tighter, emphasising the fact that he wasn’t going to lose me, or anyone else, “I love you,”

“I know,” I pressed my head in to his shoulder more, “I love you too,”
