Chapter 36

Edward

A week after we had moved in to the new house, today was the day Esme and I were starting our studies. When we had agreed to move here, Esme had asked me to join her at college, she hadn’t been in such an environment since her transformation and had agreed with Carlisle that it would probably be safest for her to have someone near by. Bella had also agreed to come, as she still hadn’t been through college, she was going to study art while Esme studied teaching, and I music.

I smiled to Bella as she combed through her hair at the dressing table in our room, “Ready for your first day of college?”

She sighed and set down the comb, “I’m worried, it’s half way through a Semester!”

I leant down to kiss her cheek, “You’ll be fine, you’ll catch up in no time.”

She didn’t look convinced as she got up and grabbed her shoes, “We’d better be going.”

I grabbed her arm as she brushed past me, “Just relax and enjoy it. If you need me, I’m only a thought away.”

Bella smiled and nodded, “I’m just nervous,” She leant up to kiss my cheek, “I love you.”

I kissed her cheek in return and murmured, “I love you too.”

We walked downstairs together and found Esme talking to Carlisle at the door, he looked to me as we joined them.

“Ready?” I asked Esme, she smiled nervously in response, both excited and nervous.

Carlisle chuckled softly and kissed her cheek, “You’ll be fine, just stay out of trouble.”

Esme gasped mockingly, “Since when was I the trouble maker?”

Bella laughed and looked to me, “We’ve got to keep Edward out of trouble!”

I frowned at her, “I was under the impression that Emmet was the troublesome child?”

Esme smiled brightly to Bella, “Not when his brother goes befriending humans!”

I pulled a face at them, “We’d better be going before Alice gets up and complained about your outfits.”

We all laughed and said our final goodbyes for the day.

At lunch I found an empty seat in the corner of a cafeteria, away form the busy area where all the best seats were. I looked up as a group of art students came in, mostly girls. I smirked to myself at their envious thoughts of the beauty of the new girl in their class. Bella followed behind them, glancing once around the cafe before coming to join me. We kissed quickly as she sat on the brown leather sofa next to me, “Did you have a good morning?”

She smiled, “How do you cope with all the whispering?”

We looked up as Esme chipped in, sitting down on the seat opposite us, “I was about to ask the same thing!”

I laughed softly, “You get used to it after a while, it’s the thoughts that are a pain.”

Bella pulled a face and rubbed my arm, her private way of asking if I wanted shielding. I shook my head with a thankful smile, she kissed my cheek and got up, “I’ll go and get something to eat.”

“Thanks, love,” I squeezed her hand as she went.

I looked to Esme, “How’s it going?”
