Chapter 22
Edward
I should have known Christmas would be a big deal, what more of an excuse would Alice need for a party?
It was five days until christmas day but, in our house it had already begun. When I finished my last day of school for the holidays I got home with Jake and Ness to find Alice instructing Jasper and Emmet on where to place the christmas tree, demanding they moved it only an inch to one side — how much of a difference does an inch make anyway?
“Hey guys,” Bella smiled as she passed us with a handful of cards, “How was your last day?”
I shrugged as I grabbed an orange from the fruit bowl on the table, “All we did was watch films, I don’t see why we went in at all really!”
Bella smiled and nodded, “Last day before christmas was always a bit pointless,” She agreed.
“Wrapped all your presents?” I asked as I popped a segment on orange in my mouth, wincing as I realised how bitter it was.
“Yep,” Bella leant against the table, “Just need the tree to be decorated and then I can actually put the presents under it.”
I smiled as we watched Alice flitting around, placing the lights and tinsel meticulously so the tree didn’t look over done.
“Mom?” Renesmee came in with Jake holding out an envelope, “You forgot to put this with the post for Charlie!”
Bella frowned and then her eyes widened, “Oh Ness, I’m sorry.” She sighed, “I’m sure he won’t mind if you give it to him when we see him on Boxing day?”
Ness sighed and nodded, looking more disappointed than she probably wanted to, “I suppose,” She shrugged, “It’s just one more present I can’t give.”
Jake sighed and hugged her tightly, “Charlie won’t mind at all Ness, he’ll be thrilled to see you anyway.”
Ness shook her head and pulled away from it, muttering as she did, “You don’t get it.”
Jake looked torn, like he wanted to go after her but knew he shouldn’t. Ness had been not her self for the past few days yet nobody had approached her about it. I decided to change that and jogged up the stairs after her.
I knocked lightly on her bedroom door and heard a sniff in response, “What?”
I opened the door a crack and said, “It’s me, want to talk?”
Ness came over and opened the door fully before holding her arms out to hug me. I wrapped my arms around her shoulder and rested my chin on her head, she cried quietly in to my chest for a few minutes, letting out whatever it was that had got her in such a state.
She eventually pulled back and wiped her eyes, “I’m sorry.”
I frowned and shook my head, she had no reason to be sorry for anything, “What is it?”
She sighed and moved to her bed, sitting cross legged on the pillows while I sat on the far corner, “I don’t want to talk about it,” She insisted, “I’m fine.”
“Last time you said that you ended up in hospital for weeks,” I pointed out a little harshly, “I thought you agreed with Bella and Carlisle that you’d talk to them more?”
Ness bought her knees up to her chest and rested her chin on them, “It’s a vampire thing, and it’s embarrassing!”
I rolled my eyes at her, we all have embarrassing stories to tell, “I promise I won’t judge,” I tried to persuade her, expecting to be unsuccessful.
