I wait outside for him to show up. It's been thirty minutes and I start to worry. What if he stood me up? Soon enough headlights hit my face blinding me. Dylan gets out of the car and runs his fingers through his hair. He catches my eye and gives me a tiny smile and slowly walks over towards me.
"Hey! I didn't know if we were gonna have coffee." he said.
"Yeah me neither. I'm just glad you didn't ditch me." I laugh.
"Nah I'm not that kind of guy." he smiles.
"That's good to know."
He opens the door for me and we walk in. We walk up to the counter and place our orders. We don't say much waiting for our drinks it was silent but the comfortable silence where you could not say a word but know how they were feeling and felt like you've been best friends since kindergarten. He hands me my drink and we find a table. He pulls my chair out and I slightly blush.
"How was the date?" he asks as he sits down.
"It wasn't good it wasn't bad either. It was just really uncomfortable. I had to lie to my friend that my ex-boyfriend couldn't make it because I didn't tell her that we broke up." I told him.
"I'm sorry about your boyfriend."
"Nah it's ok. I think that it was for the best honestly."
"How long ago was the breakup?"
"A little over a month ago. I'm getting better at moving on from him." I said.
"I'm glad you're feeling better considering it's been a month and stuff."
"Yeah I've found distractions to keep him off my mind."
"Really? Like what?" he raises his eyebrow.
"Hmm... Let me think... Football games, cafes in the morning, music, drowning in homework, and friends." I smile.
"Nice." he nods.
"Yeah." I quietly laugh," this has been really fun but I have to go. Hopefully we can continue this again soon." I get up.
"Well do you need a ride home? I could drive you home." he offers.
"No it's fine I can walk home from here." I told him.
"I really don't mind." he said.
"You don't have to."
"Ok then. I'll see you on Monday."
"Thanks for meeting me tonight it was fun." I smile.
"It was." he smiles back, "good night."
We walk out together and part ways. I watch his lights turn on and head in the opposite directions. I think about our conversation and feel myself blushing all the way home. Maybe I have a crush on Dylan but there's nothing I could do about it since he has a girlfriend. I'm still not 100% over Robbie but I feel close. I'm
learning how to move on and live without him. He's been in my life for 3 months not 17 years.______________
I enter the house and see Lauren watching tv.
Her head turns toward me," I couldn't sleep. How did the coffee thing go?"
"It went well. I had a good time for once. It was just two friends having coffee." I pause," I just realized it's the first time I've actually laughed since Robbie. I know it seems silly but I just feel really happy being with Dylan."
