Steve~ If Tomorrow Never Comes

You lay on the hospital bed, your heart monitor the only thing assuring that you were alive. Steve by your side. You two weren't an official couple, but Steve had feelings towards you that he never confessed.

Sometimes late at night
I lie awake and watch her sleeping
She's lost in peaceful dreams
So I turn out the lights and lay there in the dark

He had always had feelings towards you, but he never confessed them to you. He deeply regretted not telling you now. He watched you as your eyes laid closed and your chest moving up and down. He hopes that you are having good dreams instead of nightmares. He stood up and shut off the lights in the room, going and sitting back down next to you in the uncomfortable hospital chair. He laid his head down on your bed next to your arm, closing his eyes and eventually falling asleep.

And the thought crosses my mind

He woke up in the middle of the night, sitting up. The thought 'What would happen if I didn't wake up in the morning.' He looked over at your peaceful looking face. He wished he had told you about his feelings for you. He didn't want you not knowing how he felt about you if he never woke up the next morning.

He took a deep breath as he looked at you, then at your IVs, making sure they were okay, then looking back at you, making sure you weren't uncomfortable or anything. He had laid in his bed back at the Tower at night dreaming about how much he loved you and how he wished you were by his side. He had watched scenarios pass by his eyes. He asking you out on a date, then eventually getting married and starting a family. He saw little girls running around the house as you both cuddled on couch. He never knew if he would be able to do that because he didn't know if you felt the same about him.

And avoid that circumstance

He had lost many loved ones in his past. Even when he was he former skinny self, there were plenty of girls he would've loved to ask out on a date, but they had always went for Bucky. Then he slowly lost feelings for them and moved on. Then he lost Bucky. Then he had crashed into the ice. Waking up 70 years later and finally finding the one girl he adored for the longest time after meeting her. Peggy. Once he found her, he had spent almost all of his free time by his side. But after she passed, he felt like he had no one. And now that you were laying on that hospital bed, he couldn't confess his love for you unless you woke up, and the doctors didn't know how big of a chance you had. He felt like his heart was breaking into a million pieces and that his life was falling apart at his fingertips. Sure, he had the team, but he knew they didn't share the same feelings that he felt for you.

He took your hand in his, his hand enveloping yours perfectly as he intertwined your finger's with his carefully. He looked at you and moved a bit closer to you. He stood up and sat down on the edge of the bed and looked down at you.

"Y/N, I love you. I'm fearing that you will never be able to hear me say it, and I deeply regret that I never told you before. I know I should have, but I convinced myself that you didn't feel the same about me." he said, leaning down and kissing your cheek. You opened your eyes, although he wasn't able to see it because of the dark room.

"I love you too." you said, smiling at him. He looked at you for a minute before kissing you.
